Wheel hub difficult to spin

My husband has a 1992 Wrangler. When he takes the front wheel off on the passengers side and turns the steering wheel to the right or left the wheel hub becomes difficult to spin..it tightens up then releases when he tries to spin the hub. Also when driving if he cuts to the left or right the wheel on the passenger side feels like it's wobbling, but he hears no noise at all when driving or with wheel off. Does anyone know what could be causing this especially the problem with difficult hub?

I would guess the hub is going bad. I've heard they can do very weird things. To be sure, jack the jeep up from the frame. With the suspect tire in the air, grab the tire at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock and try to rock it. If you can rock the tire at all that means the wheel bearing is bad.

Sounds like the ball joints are shot...my guess on the hub not turning( and it too could be going bad) when you turn the wheel the the ball joints which are at the top and bottom of the knuckle the hub sits in get out of line and I will guess put force on the shaft somehow lot letting the hub turn. good news is parts are not to bad to fix.. just takes some time if you do it your self.. also might not be a bad idea to replace the hubs at the same time...

Very true. You can check the ball joints the same time as the hub. With the hub you try to rock the tire, but to check the ball joints pry up on the tire. Meaning use a pry bar or equivalent to see if you can pry straight up (vertically, towards the fender) on the tire. Any play means bad ball joints.

There's some great instructional videos on youtube for both

This sounds like the u-joints/cv joints are binding up.

I just replaced the axle u joint on my passenger side wheel this weekend. The ball joints are easily inspected after taking the tire off and if you find the hub is bad well I hope he has oxy acetylene torches to heat up axle and spindle nuts cuz all of mine were caked in rust. Also if the hub is seized to the spindle, which probably is, take a long socket or extension and wedge it between the hub and spindle. Turn the car on with both front wheels in air and turn the wheel. That'll pop the hub off no problem.
