I have a 1992 yj with about 157,000 miles. I have an intermittant whinning noise either comming from the rear end or the transfer case. I guess it could be the transmission too but it sound more towards the rear of the jeep. I usually hear it on the freeway after getting off of the gas and letting it coast. I have turned off the engine, pushed in the clutch and taken it out of gear and it still remains. As long as the wheels are putting torque on the drive train it whines. The whinning noise will decrease in tone as you are slowing. Its sounds like tire whine on the road but it can't be that because it would be doing it all the time. Any suggestions?
