White smoke when the engine is cold

So, I replaced the thermostat and the water pump. Ran fine that night, didn't run it only for 20 minutes maybe. Next morning, I go to drive to work and there's all this white smoke coming out of the back while it's warming up, but goes away before I get to work. Now if it's cool in the morning I notice some white smoke until it warms up. It's losing coolant, nothing too heavy, but all the same about a quarter of a gallon a week maybe. You can smell the coolant sometimes through the vents. When I add coolant white smoke comes out right afterwards. Any suggestions?

I'm gonna guess head gasket is shot, but wait for more feedback on this one.

is there any way to seal it temporarily? Why would it start this right after I replaced the thermostat and the water pump? Why not before?

Not really if it is blown gasket. You have to pull the head to get to the gasket where it is leaking.

Now I didn't want to freak you out and say it could also be a cracked head, but first things first.

is it possible its just condensation, misty white smoke from tailpipe when cold isn't always bad, sometimes normal. smelling coolant through the vents could be heater core, and not quite leaking enough to make it to the floor.

just a thought, kinda rare for jeep motor to burn coolant in motor, external oil sometimes, but anything's possible, especially with a jeep.

I'm thinking it could be a leak into the manifold, I'm going over to a buddy's house this weekend so he can pressure test it and take a look at it. Until then, I pray it does not blow up, or seize up, or crack.

If anyone else has input on this between now and Sunday, I'd sure like to hear to give me a better idea of where to look and possibly how to repair.

Thanks,

Have you looked into your air cleaner housing? If you are getting exhaust gas condensation in your recirculation lines you may also have what looks like a melted vanilla milkshake in your air cleaner housing.

That can be caused by a lot of low speed, stop and go driving in which you don't build up enough heat in the system to really dry it out. That is most likely the cause of your "white smoke" in the mornings.

How old is your catalytic converter? If it is starting to plug you can have an exhaust problem and loss of power when driving.

No I am not trying to make you crazy, that's what your parents are for.

I'm gonna revise my opinion here and go with the heater core going bad. Stick your nose down in the exhaust (very briefly) and see if you smell the anti freeze there.

Check the lines were they go through the firewall.

i wanna know what it is when you find out. i don't think i've ever seen a 4.0 do this, ACCEPT for being over heated, and cracked head. not common. i still think its normal condensation, and heater core might have small leak if he's losing coolant

headgasket shouldn't clear up when engine warms up, coolant is under more pressure when warm. condensation will burn off, and clear up.
