I am helping my buddy look for a new Jeep. He killed his 95 YJ and is looking for another. We test drove a 1990 with 4.0L and ran fine, however, It did not want to downshift. It shifted up just fine, no grinding, but with the downshift, it just would not engage. Some grinding when it would finally go into gear at slower speeds. I drive a TJ which don't like to down shift into second when cold, but I have never driven one so stubborn. Any advice from YJ owners? I am trying to help him avoiding buying a lemon like he did last time. Is this common in older YJ's? Is something going out in the clutch assembly, or god forbid the transmission?
