Will a 1998 NP231 fit into a 1991

I'm switching out my transfer case in a couple of days and I just got a used 1998 NP231 from a Wrangler.

My question, is there anything that will not fit from the '98 once I put it in my '91? The '98 was bone stock and all my hook-ups (driveshafts, no SYE, etc) are stock.

The reason I am switching it out is because every time I drive about 10 ft. when I am in 4H or 4L I get a loud pop noise like something is biding up. I took it to a transmission shop and they said it was probably my chain slipping inside the TC. They wanted $400+ to just fix the chain! I figured I could get a used TC and put that in and even rebuild my old one if I really got eager.

no the later 231s have a different input style and will not bolt up to the later rigs they changed just enough about them. before swaping cases I'd check the adjustment and linkage on the t-case that can often be an issue and very easy to fix.

Crap! SHould have asked this question before I bought the TC.

I haven't really worked with TC's too much. So, when you say check the adjustments and linkage; what exactly does that mean?

If the '98 np231 is slightly different, can I take off parts from my '91 np231 and add them to the '98 and then it fit?

I'm trying to get an answer before I tear everything apart. I don't want to be left with an un-drivable Jeep for a while.
