Will a power steering gear box work on a manual steering Jeep?

The gear box in my YJ is pretty much shot. Been searching for steering boxes and finding more power steering ones than manuals. My Jeep is manual steering, will a power steering box do it without adding a pump, etc?

On s10's, people swap them all the time, but usually the manual steering gears are geared lower to make it easier to turn the wheel. I imagine Jeep is similiar, meaning it will be harder to turn the wheel with a power steering gear that isn't hooked up.

Correct me if I'm wrong but just swapping the steering gear box from your manual box to a power steering box wouldn't work. The power steering box needs the high pressure hydraulics from the pump to move. You would need to do a power steering conversion. It's not to difficult.

You would need the power steering pump/tank, gear box w/ pitman arm, and hoses. I just did this on my 90 yj 2.5L. I used most everything from a jeep Cherokee. The gear box mounts the same as the manual. The tank is attached to the pump and that bolted right up to my motor. My steer shaft fit right over the shaft on the gear box. I did have to find a different pulley because I have v-belt not the serpentine belt ( I think yours does). I also had to have hoses made.

I like power steering so much more than the manual!

You don't need a power steering pump to use the steering gear. If you turn off your Jeep that has power steering, try to turn the wheels, that's the same as if you ran it without the pump. Although, when you are moving, it will be easier to turn as there will be less resistance. It's mainly when parking that the manual steering sucks.

If you run a power steering box like that with no pump, you will run into issues. I did that on a pick up when I was younger (not very smart) and it locked up within a year.

Swap it out

At this point I'd go to power steering. If you have the gear box, you're half way there. Go to a salvage yard, craigslist or eBay and get the pump, hoses, resevior and brakets and bolts. Don't forget the BOLTS

I have a 93 that had manual steering. One season of off-road and I said enough is enough. Got on eBay found a guy selling a complete power steering set-up for a 2.5. Box, pump, everything. Probly one of the best investments yet.
