Wipers don't work, any suggestions?

I just purchased my first Jeep. It's a 1989 Wrangler with a 2.5L and 5 speed. I started her up, and tested the turn signals. They work. When I tried to turn on the wipers, they didn't move. About two seconds later, I noticed a small puff of smoke wafting out of the square hole on the side of the steering column where the lever goes through. I immediately turned the wiper function off, and the smoke stopped. I'm not good at tracking down electrical issues, especially on a vehicle that is new to me. Is there a switch or other electrical component inside the column that could have gone bad and produced that small bit of smoke?

Yes..your wiper switch is located inside the steering column. Quadratec has them for around 65.00. They're not that hard to replace, but you need a couple of specialty tools to do the job. A steering wheel puller and a lock ring removal tool. You can buy them for 15-20 bucks each, or most parts stores will rent them to you. Search the threads on here as there are a couple of excellent ones with pics on how to do the removal and install.....

Check the ground on the wiper motor first - trust me. Pull the dash panel and clean and re-ground it motor. Cheap, easy, and will likely work. Mine was doing the same thing.

When you say "pull the dash panel", do you mean the entire dash panel? Sounds like a major chore. Is that the only way to reach the wiper motor ground? Please excuse my ignorance, I took possession of my Jeep two days ago.

The wiper motor grounds through the black wire to a ground splice in the wire harness behind the dash, through the bulkhead connector and to a body ground in the engine compartment. If you saw smoke from the steering column more than likely you need a new switch. You'll probably need a wiper motor too. The switch didn't burn up for no reason, and a shorted motor is the probable cause.
