wiring under the dash

Hey folks.

I have a lot of loose wires under the dash. I don't know what they hook to. Here is my real problem, I'm too OCD for my YJ. A lot of things in the cab don't work for example, the interior lights are on all the time when the head lights are on. The front speakers don't work, the indicator light for 4wd doesn't work, and probably some more stuff. I'm posting some pics of some wiring harnesses that aren't connected to anything. I'm trying to just clean it up and get rid of aftermarket stuff that isn't on the jeep anymore. Can anyone ID any of this stuff? Any suggestions?

same problem with mine. when i have the time to devote to it, i'll likely pull the panels and rewire everything nice and neat. other than that, you can't tell much from pictures. maybe some here are experienced enough but i'm sure not. try some twist ties and put em nice and snug up behind the dash for the time being

Time to get a manual and start tracing them via the wiring diagrams, the diagrams will have the wire colors etc.

That's what I need. I haven't seen a diagram with the colors. I'm gonna order the Haynes manual tonight.

I'm doing the exact thing right now. I can tell you the pink and black connector in the top picture is the rear defroster and wiper switches. The connectors on the R/H side next to the door are a unused connector for the speakers if you have a factory sound bar, it should have a metal clip on it? Sorry thats all I can tell.

If you can get a Chiltons manual, they are a bit more informative. Thats what I'm using to clean up the same issue on mine.

The diagrams are not in color, usually there are small letters like bw, o,gn, etc. They will tell you what the colors are, should be a chart...

Dont waste your time with a Haynes book. It's all generic in there. If you know anybody that can look at Mitchell on Demand, thats the place to get them. I got the one for my 95 and they were right on target.Color for color. I took every wire and traced it out and if it wasnt needed it got gone. The inch thick ball of wires under the hood is down to 9 wires I kept and under the dash about a third are gone. I put an LT1 in mine and just didnt want all the unused wires left on the jeep.

If you are having spotty electrical issues with your dash and lights, it might be your multi-function switch. The YJ I bought has working gauges, no turn signal indicator lights (but the signals worked outside), no dimmers, and no high-beams. I replaced the multi-function switch and all works fine now.

could you send me that? I have the same problem with my little brother's 94. Its a rats nest under there

Edit:

I have the haynes manual.... What a waste of money. I think i may cough up the money for the Mitchell 1 manuals online. The haynes is WAY too general
