YJ 4.0 wiring

I'm considering a possible Cherokee 4.0/AW4 conversion into my 2.5 89 YJ and I'm trying to figure out as much as I can before I decide if I want to go through with it or not, mainly the wiring. Will an engine harness and computer from a 4.0 YJ work on a Cherokee 4.0? Then all I would have to do would be to tie in the 10 or so wires from the transmission that go to the engine computer. Or would I be better off using the Cherokee harness and adapting it to the YJ bulkhead? And will the YJ computer work with the Cherokee flywheel or pressure plate and CPS? I'm just trying to figure out the easiest way to do it. Also, the accessories (power steering, water pump, etc.). I think I read somewhere that some of them aren't interchangeable. Maybe some of you guys that have done this already could offer some help. Thanks!

You don't say what year XJ...I'm guessing it's 91 or later, so either OBD1 (or later OBD2?).

If so, then you'll want to use all of the XJ wiring, ECU, etc.

You'll also have to upgrade/modify your dash wiring to get your gauges to work. I'm imagining that all this will be difficult. It may involve some gauge replacements.

You'll love the power of the 4.0L. I did the same swap, but since my Jeep is 1995, I was able to just do some simple mods to my wiring. You're job will be more difficult, but will be worth it in the end.

Thanks for the reply. That's what I figured about the dash wiring and gauges. I can get that pretty easy. I haven't locked down an XJ yet, but they're everywhere around here. I was planning on finding a 91-96 and staying OBD1 for simplicity's sake. I would get the engine harness as well, because I'll need the transmission wiring regardless. I just wasn't sure if a 4.0 YJ harness and computer would work with an XJ engine or if it would be easier to tie the XJ harness into the YJ bulkhead. Again, thanks!
