YJ Air Conditioner

Hey my neighbor also has a YJ 4 banger. When looking at his air conditioner we noticed the wire going to his compressor had a diode in line with it. I know what a diode does, but can anyone tell me what it is doing in this circumstance. Does anyone else have a diode in line with their hot wire?

Thanks

A diode usually just allows current to flow only one way, but is probably used as a transcient suppressor in this case. The clutch coil in the compressor pulley could generate a considerable EMF voltage spike similar to the action in an ignition coil. Diodes are used in other similar relay coil circuits to shunt such spikes.

I figured it was to clean up the current but I wasnt sure why. He took it out of the circuit. What do you think will happen? Blown fuses, radio noise?

Probably nothing. When they started putting computer circuits in automobiles, spikes from potential sources became an issue so that would be my concern, but I'm usre there are other suppression components in/near any computer circuits. Shouldn't cause radio noise, shouldn't blow fuses.
