Thinking about replacing my rusted and terrible looking body mounts. I have a feeling a few bolt will snap, requiring me to drill them out. My question is, what do the bolt screw into? Is the tub threaded or is there an insert? If its an insert how do I go about this? Thanks for any info.
The bolt screws into a nut plate that is captured inside a box attached to the tub. This box is what you see when you look for where the bolt screws into. If you can't find an opening, then drill a small hole in the box so you can spray WD40 or your favorite penetrating oil on the nut plate and bolt. Spray each bolt every day for a week or so and use a socket and ratchet to romove the bolts. A powerful air impact is a great tool but unless you can turn the torque down you will probably break a few bolts. Once you have the bolts broke loose, spray more oil and tighten them back up. Spray more oil and loosen them. Tighten, spray and loosen. Repeat until the bolt comes out. On a 20+ year old car you will still probably break a bolt or two (especially the back ones). You will then need to cut the box open, (Harbor Freight die grinder...about $20.00) remove the broken bolt & nut plate. Try prying up on the unwelded side of the cage that holds the nut plate. You can then heat the nut plate while it is in a vice and remove the broken bolt with vice grips. You will have to weld the box shut once you replace the nut plate. If you don't have a welder try autobody adhesive that most autobody supply stores have and glue a patch over the access hole that you cut. Give it a shot of undercoat and you will be brand new. When I did mine the body lift kit instructions said to use loctite. I used neversieze and from time to time I get under my Jeep to insure the body bolts are tight. I did a 2" body lift in order to keep the center of gravity low and not have to deal with SYE or other suspension issues. 31X10.5X15 BFGs clear the 6" flares and the wider flares help to keep my Jeep cleaner. I don't do serious crawling, mostly forest service roads & legal trails.
Good Luck, L.M.
Thanks very informitive. Im looking at putting a 2.5 lift with 32's but the those darn body mount bushings look so bad I really wanna take care of that.
