YJ Dana 30 Axle Shaft Removal

I have a '92 YJ with the stock Dana 30 front end. I'm in the process of getting new axle shafts and gears. My stock U-joints are just about shot. This is my daily driver. I looked at how the hubs are made, and have a midterm solution until I receive my new axles. Could I remove the axle shafts, plug up the axle tubes, and drive it like that until I get my new ones, or would that damage the hub unit? It looks like it could be done, I've had the shafts out before because of U-joints, so, I have an idea of how they come together. Thanks

Jerry

I think you should be able to.. but something is tell me no, or that you have to leave the outer shaft attached to the hub. If the u-joints are the only problem why not just replace them and be done with it?

You can remove the axle shafts, and still run your YJ in 2H, with no problem. As you said, just stuff a rag in both ends, to keep the oil in, and the dirt out.

You must keep the outer stubs installed or the wheels will fall off. You can remove the inners but the outers must stay.
BTW I had a buddy do this as a trail repair he almost made it back to camp before it fell apart

Then why bother taking anything apart. 'Just about' = 'not' and in 2wd there is no load on them anyway. Leave it alone until that 'in the process' part happens.

bc the u-joints are spinning even in 2wd. and if one of them u-joints lets go while he's drivin down the road he's in for some trouble. so he's just gonna pull the inner's and the u-joints until he does the whole front axle job. to save him some time and money. and from damage if they let go

if you drop the front driveshaft the u-joints are still there. meaning they will still rotate and continue to wear until the completely fail and cause unwanted damage. its not the fact of easy and cheap. its that fact that he doesnt wanna do it now then have to do it again in 2 weeks when he puts in new gears and axle shafts. i'm with him all the way on this
