YJ Dash Light Problem

I have a 1992 Jeep YJ and whenever I turn the headlights on my dash lights shut off. The dash lights are on when the headlights are off. I ordered a brand new headlight switch and installed it today. The new switch does nothing. I push the switch up and the headlights do not turn on, however the dash lights still work. I reinstalled the old switch and am again stuck with no dash lights when the headlights are on. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Eric

Also, I do not know if it is the headlight switch that is the problem. That was my first guess and I tried it

I think I'm going to replace the dimmer switch. My switch only clicks when I spin it to the very top. In other words, it only clicks once. Does your's click more than once?

My dimmer only clicks at the top but has a few spots as I dim it that the dash lights flicker. I've been meaning to pull it out and take the air compressor to it. Could just be dirty contacts.

Yeah mine doesn't dim at all. Tomorrow I'll take that out and try cleaning it because it's to dark to work tonight. Thanks for the quick replies

In behind the "wheel" is a reostat, that dims the lights. Sometimes its just dirty, and others the contacts are burnt.

If its not letting the new headlight switch work, its most likely a dead short in the dimmer. But it puzzles me why the old switch works the headlights with no dash lights.

There should only be a click at the top of the wheel, that is where it would turn on your interior light.
