YJ door and tailgate locks

My ign key does not open my doors or tailgate. I've been reading all the different post on rekeying and locksmiths in my neck of the woods are all trying to hit the loto on a rekeying job. Saw a post that said grind/file off the tumblers with the key in the lock. Can anyone tell me more about how this is done and what it accomplishes??? Thanks in advance.

It may actually be cheaper to buy an ignition that matches your locks and just put new locks/ignition in. The locksmiths around here are the same way. To re-key (assuming I brought them all components) would run me over $250.

I have taken mine apart and used the filing method to rekey my doors and tailgate after some P.O. changed the steering column and I replaced the tailgate. It's not that hard, but keep in mind that it may allow other keys to work on your locks as well.

Go to Advance Auto Parts and buy new door locks. About $28 for two locks and two keys. I do not mind having an extra key.

Thanks for the suggestions. Problem with buying locks from Advance Auto is you only get two. Then what about the tailgate? I called several Lockcrooks today and got prices from $65 to $150 for rekeying my three locks to accept my ignition key. I don't mind the two key thing so I am going to try to have a key made for my lock cylinders. Got a price of $25.00 for that service if I bring the cylinder to them. ID numbers on the doors tells me they are original to the jeep and pretty sure the tailgate is original to the vehicle so hopefully the key I get made will fit all three. Will let you know. Haven't removed the tailgate cylinder yet. I am assuming that it is the same type as the doors. Anyone know? Thanks again.
