My newly acquired 93 wrangle drives like crap (borderline dangerous). I know I need to replace the tie rod ends but based on inspection that's all I need to replace. Will the tie rod ends make it drive that bad? It walks the road really really bad and cuts right with I let off the gas pedal. Is this just something I'll have to get used to?
Do you have track and sway bars? Mine jerks to the right a little when I let off the gas abruptly and it didnt before I removed the track and sway bars. If I ease out of the throttle it doesnt do it. I can feel it do the opposite when I stomp on it from a stop. I believe its just warn out parts. AKA the beginning of death wobble. Ball joints and tie rod ends probably
It is not normal, I can let go of the steering wheel at 70 mph and my "92" tracks perfect, and that's with a 5" lift and 35" tires. I'd jack the front off the ground and start tugging to see if there is any play. Start with the steering shaft and box, check for play with the tires/wheels, have someone turn the steering back and fourth and see how the tie-rod and drag link work together. Also, how are the tires? are they wearing even? may want to rotate them and see how the rears work on front.
Mine tracks perfect as well with 35s, it just jerks right when I let off the gas then straightens back out. Its the shifts in weight from abrupt accel/decel that effect mine.lol
You might also want to check the rear spring pins to make sure your rear axle is not shifting when you let off on the gas or accelerate....also check the motor mounts
thought my 91's ball joints were in good shape based on inspection, but decided to replace anyways since jeep had 175000 miles. after pulling steering knuckles off axle, I found out how bad they really were. jeep drives a lot better now. I would replace everything tie rod ends, drag link sway bar links and ball joints.
Jack up the front wheels, one at a time, grab the wheel and check for movement in the vertical and horizontal planes. There really shouldn't be any play in any of the ball joints, replace what ever has play. Also check the pitman arm at the steering box, I had one wear the splines out....
