YJ Keys

Might be a dumb question. Just picked up an old '93, the owner gave me the "key". I tried to lock and unlock the doors with it but it will not fit in any door.

Is the ignition key the same as the door key? Thanks

Ah the good old days when vehicles had 2 different keys. You should have 1 square for ignition and one round for doors and tailgate...

You have non-original doors. The '93 model year key worked both doors and ignition.
Either that or the lock cylinders for either the doors or the ignition have been changed and nobody bothered to have them re-keyed.

Same happened when i bought mine. I popped the rear tailgate cylinder and took it to a locksmith. Had keys in 2 mins for $10. Works great.

You can remove the cylinder and you may be able to re-key the one you have, sometimes it's just one tumbler off, you can remove the one or file it if you don't have any.

I'm pretty sure the ignition switch was changed at some point, gonna pop off one of the lock cylinders and do the locksmith thing. Thanks for the tips.

I was going to say that on my 93 the ignition was the same as the doors.

I think either quadratec, or morris has the set that you can buy that will give you 2 keys and the ignition and all 3 doors. But, if I remember correctly its a bit pricey.
