YJ missing A/C system

i am currently shopping for my first jeep. it seems that i have inadvertently been drawn to the YJ models. those square head lamps just do something for me.

a common issue i have been coming across in my searching is that the YJ's will not have ac. and when i get to the jeep to look it over, or i call the owner, they tell me that there are no A/C components under the hood at all.

my question:is having no AC something that is common in the YJ? were they manufactured that without one or has some yahew disfigured it? also how difficult would it be to add/install an AC system under the hood?

No need for a/c. Take off the doors and top.
One less thing to worry about failing.

AC was mostly a dealer installed option though my RENE came with it as part of the Renegade package from the factory, the dealer may still have put it on. It is not a normal option on YJ especialy soft tops for obvious reasons. There are add on kits, it would not be difficult but they would have to have the new formula gas. I'm happy with my air and use it on the trips to the desert where it's often very hot. Once I'm off-road the softtop and doors come off because I like the open feel and want to be able to see where i place my tires.

I just can't justify A/C on a Wrangler. Mine had a perfectly good working A/C when I bought it. It was the first thing I removed. Mainly due to the fact i'd never use it & it was in the way both in the cab & under the hood.

But that's just me. You might want/need A/C. YJ's were avaliable with A/C but it was an add on.

I'm willing to be the ratio of jeeps equipped with A/C vs not equipped is 20/80.

My previous TJ had AC and I never once used it. AC and gas mileage are two things not really relevant to purchasing a Jeep

AC in YJ's are rare... I had factory unit in my 95, worked fine. Aftermarket sells what you need. right around 1k bucks for a kit as I recall... ackits.com sells them.....

My 95 is prewired for a/c but has none, it also has the compressor bracket installed from the factory. CJ and YJ air conditioning has always been a dealer installed option.
For those of you that feel no need for A/C wait till you get older or move to a warmer climate you will want to install it if its a DD.

Jeep CL, Wrangler ETc from 1981 to 2011 complete AC kits are available at Air&Sound. Under dash for the CJ 81-96 models. Thru the factory vents on the 97 to 06. The new Wrangler from 07-11 also thru the OE vents.
The 81-96 is easy as is the 97-06. I personally could install them in less than 6 hours.

The YJ AC unit is a little wimpy. I have one in my 95. It keeps things a little cooler at stop lights. The vents are down low, and the volume of air isn't enough for the Texas summer. It's still useful...

I just finished the install in my Jeep , it was relatively easy and it blows out 34 degree air. Tinted windows and full doors and a hardtop help quite a bit.
