I've read that the crankshaft and cam sensors can both cause the drivability issue you've described.

They are both common failure items and fortunately cheap and easy to replace.

A failing oxygen sensor may also cause issues.

Hopefully someone with some more experience here will chime in.

When it is not starting, are you actually getting fuel sprayed into the intake (not just pressure) and is the spark firing?

You may have an intermittent ground connection. Passenger side of the block rear is a collection of grounds. Remove all clean meticulously and then the last on should be drivers side valve cover or cylinder head ground strap. Clean both ends no paint left under at the firewall. See what that does for the problem.

Check and clean the connections at the ECM too.
