YJ Problems

Hi all, I'm pretty new to jeeping and I am addicted to it.. I recently picked up a YJ for a sweet price and all the misc add-ons. But right now i'm limited to where i can go..

Problems:

When i turn my headlights on my jeep sputters, and it missfires. It sputters trying to catch the rythm. It does it through all gears. But when i turn off my lights it runs perfect no problems.

When i use my turn signals it sputters also.

Seems when i use any of my lights, turn signals, and running lights.

My alternator is new, and Battery stays charged.

What should i check that is an ongoing problem with the YJ's or do you think it is something else?

Help

Thanks Jay

Sounds like you have a dead short somewhere, get a test light and start checking your ground wires at the turn signals/running lights. Is the wiring hacked up?

It definitely sounds like a ground problem in the lighting system.

The wiring isn't hacked.. but there was an after market cd player in it.. I checked that but no luck..

I'm heading out to check the turnsignals and running lights.. also the headlights..

You say an aftermarket cd player was installed? Check the wiring on it. Theres one wire ive come into problems with hooking up that it will affect the lighting. Ive never had that problem with it sputtering the engine, but it does mess with the lights though. I forget which wire it is, i think its the "illumination wire", but dont quote me on that because its been a while since my last cd player install. But its just something to go over and check further too..

I totally disconnected the cd player and tried the lights and still sputtering king..
I took a look at all the wiring under the dash nothing is frayed or exposed, checked the tails, and headlights for grounding and everything is in order. no luck.

I'll continue to look for the problem

see if the prior owner tapped into ecu power for his lighting. may be a signal for engine control is being interrupted some how. look at fuse block.

fella's 1 old trick i have used for years,,take a regular test light,,put between negative post on battery and neg. terminal,.,.if you have a pos.+ wire touching somewhere it will light up,,,same with pos.+ post and terminal to check something grounding,.,.,.,when u find either,,pull 1 fuse at a time, when light goes out you've found which circuit problem is in

Another thing to try is check the screws for the neg on either side of the lights under the hood they might be dirty or rusty
