YJ Rebuild... need opinions for parts??

ok guys here's a little back ground info. Ive got a 93 yj, 2.5L, manual transmission, stock suspension. 193k miles and alot of centimental value invested

I would like to rebuild the jeep i have. I know it is easy to say sell and buy what I am wanting but I would like to do this rebuild with my father-in-law that has a custom rod shop. I am looking to put in whatever I need to run 33"-35" tires, and plan to do a spring over axle conversion also.

I have another vehicle to drive but will eventually make this my daily driver after the build. I would like to go with a 6 cylinder motor idealy. so the question is if you had about $10k to invest in this jeep what performance mods would you make?

I hope to get most parts from a salvage yard at all possible, and ease of being able to work on, please, keep that in mind for what I need to be searching for. I plan on getting all hardware and supplies before the build so lets talk about what parts we need to be looking for.

and as people reply could we list pros/cons of specific parts

Motor with transmission and transfer case???

Front axles?

Rear axles?

New Driveshafts?

Anything else imaginable?

I say go for it.

4.3l vortec v6, with sm465trans, 231 tranfer case, 8.8 ford rear with locker, hpd30 with locker. gear it at 4.88.

The lockers are optional if your gonna street drive it.

way less than 10 k there so the rest on fun stuff.

X2 on this, just get an 8.8 with a limited slip and not a locker for a DD.
And with a 4.3 the list of Mods. for power is very long.

you could also look for a 4.0 wrangler with rusted out tub or frame for cheap and swap everything over then spend on the rear axle and selectable lockers

I say V8 it and be done....a V6 isnt gonna be any cheaper or better on gas. If you wanted a 6 you could do a 4.0 swap, but your gonna need a pretty extensive list of parts to make it work right (and look like it was supposed to be there)....anyone can cobble some crap together, it takes a craftsman to make it look like it was made there in the first place. For just a 33-35 you can get away with the front axle, and I am with everyone else on the 8.8. But in my true to self approach I say go big or go home lol....everything I own has a 60 front in it, I have a sick fetish I suppose.

i thought about just finding a low mileage s-10 and buying it, then i would have the motor and the wiring harnes and everything but the more i think about it im gonna pass on this and just find a salvage yard that has all the stuff i need.

I'm gonna start looking for the 8.8 and hpd30 axles soon. is there anything in particular about those axles i need to look for.

you should already have an hp d30....

a blazer would work too. ideally for the 4.3 you want the vortec motor.

i said i would stay in the 33-35" range on tires but if i eventually keep going up what would be the largest size tires that this drivetrain will be able to hold up to? 37 or larger? b/c i can see my self pushing the limit and going balls to the wall on the tire size one day. I would rather put in heavier axles now rather than 3 years from now and have to do it all over again.

is there a difference in the hp d30 axles and a d30 axle. I don't know. I was under the assumption that the d30's where not as strong as the hp d30's.

There are several variants of the d30, but the biggest difference strength wise is the HP which stands for high pinion, where the pinion enters the differential housing higher than the center line of the axle housing.. Then there is low pinion, where it enters below the center line. The cut of the gear teeth in a high pinion front axle is a reverse cut, and in font axle applications is stronger than a standard cut. It has to do with the pinion teeth engaging on the drive side of the ring gear teeth rather than the coast side of the teeth.

Also it has to do with deflection. In a high pinion front end the pinion gear while under load is being forced into the ring gear where the teeth have the most material, in a low pinion front end when under load, the pinion is being pushed away from the ring gear causing the teeth to engage towards the ends where there is less material

I've seen 36's run hard on an 8.8 and hpd30. If your going bigger someday then for sure step it up now. 60 front 14b rear makes a noice strong setup but probably getting out of your price range for the whole setup......

if yours is stock which it most likely is, then you have a hp d30, you can tell by looking at the side.. look at your rear axle compared to your front, see how the driveshaft connects higher on the axle in the front than the rear?
