YJ ride vs TJ ride

I have a 94 YJ and have been thinking about getting a new or newer TJ. Is there a difference in the on the road ride quality between the two? My TJ will jar the fillings out of your mouth on the highway if there are bumps and cracks in the pavement. I suspect the newer Jeeps are so rough but I am only guessing. Since I do little off roading I am not worried about that aspect of the ride or capabilities.

when i drove a tj i got a little swaying feeling vice the rocking motion of a yj. this is spring related. also, you will possibly feel a difference in the steering as the front axle is different.

I have a TJ and a YJ, and I prefer the ride of my YJ. The TJ seems to rock back and forth when you hit a bump.

I had all 3. TJ, YJ, and a JK. the JK is almost car like in ride. Nice getting in and out because it does not have the stepup in the lower door area.
I am very particular about things and give a honest answer. The ride goes like this
JK, TJ and YJ.

Dont know what the others are talking about on the side to side motion. Tj is at least 2 steps up from YJ in ride and comfort. Very smooth. But nothing compared to the 07 and up.
I have been driving Jeeps since 86. I have owned a 72, 74, 83,86, 87,88,89, 91, 93,94, 97,99,2002, 20032004, 2007. yeah I know thats alot. But some I didnt own for more than a few months. Those are just the CJ based Jeeps. I have owned a pile of Cherokees too.
These are the 2 I got now. I sold my 2003 about 4 months ago.

So the best rides are going to be 07 and newer? Is there any reason to get the 09 or 10 other than warranty? The new warranty sounds pretty sweet.

I say TJ, it has a good ride while still feeling like a jeep!!! JK is to car like, The point is to get a jeep and JKs just dont have the same vibe, IMO

BigKahuna: the fans of the YJ are hairy chested guys who prefer their meat mooing, their drink to be moonshine and their women to be 6 feet tall and muscular. They think "comfort" is something for small children and old ladies. They think vehicle technology was perfect in 1960 and has just gone downhill from then. They like to fix their vehicles with vice-grips and sticks.

This "swaying" vs "rocking" motion is, I think, a minor thing.

The TJ (97 and up) is more comfortable on the road than a YJ, and the JK (07 and up) is more civilized yet.

YJs and CJs are incredibly tough, incredibly cool rigs. But the ride ain't so good. Go test a TJ and a JK. You'll see.

Disclosure: I own two CJs. A 1960 and a 1980. I like them.

I dont know where people get that a Jeep needs to beat ya to death to be called a jeep. I drove my YJ across country and back 4 times. 2500 miles each way and the back of my head was sore from the bouncing. I drove 800 miles straight in the tj and was no worst for wear other than I had to wear ear plugs due to the soft top flap.
The JK is a no brainer. I drove 600 miles in it the other day. Other than the damn door seals letting in rain I had a great time.

The ride is defintely better in any jeep with the coils. The leaf springs don't have the travel of the coils, and they hit the bump stops on big hits. However, one advantage to the older rigs is the simplicity. In spite of what Geoff says about YJ fans being hairy chested, amazon loving carnivores, there is a beauty to the simplicity of a jeep with no air bags, little in the way of creature comforts, and no complex systems to fail on you. I would love a CJ with some of the suspension technology of the newer jeeps. The old metal dash and big Speedo is a classic look to me. My YJ has the plastic dash with the plastic grab bar, but no big center unit like the newer models. The YJ ride is harsh and noisy. Things rattle around as they get old and loose, and as the plastic screw mounts break, but it all keeps going and working. I like that regardless of what goes wrong, it's usually not too expensive or difficult to fix, and after 16 years, not that much has gone wrong. People might like arguing over which jeep model is better, but I like them all. The newer ones have certainly gotten more car-like in an attempt to have a broader appeal and sell more units. It seems they are succeeding at that, but from what I can tell, the newer models still go where you point them, and that's really what a jeep is all about to me. Drive them all and you'll figure out which one has the right mix of features and cost to suit you. Don't let somebody else's opinion drive your decisions, because as we all know, opinions are like hemorrhoids, every a$$hole gets them sometimes.

I would say the biggest difference is the TJ and bumps in the road, they do not feel as bad as a YJ or CJ. That being said, a TJ is not a lexus. Off road wise, stock to stock.. TJ has the edge. I have driven a few new JK's and they drive car like vs jeep like. Not a bad thing just different.

ive rode in a yj and a tj and now drive a tj IMO the tj rides better. and my friend has a jk... it does ride like a car but i think the ugly as sin.

I own & wheel both. They each shine in certain areas. Both ride about the same on road also; though the TJ does have a little better ride. That being said, I still prefer my 1990 YJ over my TJ when offroad. I've seen a lot of leave-sprung jeeps out on the trails that articlulated just as well as coil-sprung Jeeps. YJs tend to be a little easier to afford when buying one for the first time & many times you can get one already lifted @ a fairly reasonable price.

I 100% agree. Our 1960 CJ5 is 100% stock. There's no plastic on it anywhere, with the exception of the 4 gear shift knobs. (tranny, hi, lo, pto - it looks like a porcupine in there). Everything on it serves a distinct purpose. There's no "padding."

I consider it a piece of art. It's pure mechanical function-over-form.

But the question wasn't which Jeeps are coolest, or even which Jeeps deal best with the rough stuff. The question was "will my teeth be happier in a TJ or JK than they are in a YJ?" And the answer has to be yes.

YJ vs TJ vs CJ ride

Wow I thought I had a Jeep problem after owning 17 jeeps of all kinds. I own a 1980 CJ-5 that I bought new and it has 387,000 plus on it, rides like a CJ end of story. Also have a 1999 TJ 4" lift on 32 MT ATZ and love the ride but I'am 52 so gotta keep the old jeep just because!! The old CJ is one tough Jeep. Been there four wheeled that!! The TJ is fun My kids like to drive it more civilized and stuff. No replacement for displacement in the CJ, Just put a 401 and it has a lot of low end, great in 4 low but hard on the long drive.

My TJ rode much better than my YJ does. It is a lot easier to pay for the YJ. I had an '05 LJ and it rode nearly as good as a XJ...very sweet. I used to bash on the JKs until I saw a stock one silently climb a hill that gave my fairly well built cherokee a tough time. Not only does the JK ride better, but I believe they go as well or better than anything before them. All that being said, I love my YJ. It seems tougher than the TJ.
