YJ Starting Issue

I have a 95 YJ Wrangler 4 cylinder. Every time I try to start my jeep it turns and turns (3-5 seconds) before it starts. Now once the engine is started and running, I can shut it off and turn it back on and it only takes a millisecond before it fires right back up. It only happens when it has not been started in awhile. Also it seems to be getting worse, as if every time it sits for along time it takes another second and a half on top of the original (3-5) seconds. Any ideas? I just want to get this glitch fixed before winter sets in and I'm dead on my feet when it is 20 degrees outside and snowing.. (Future FML) Any help would be great, thanks guys!

Bro this is such a common problem...I've heard it could be the carb, but I'm thinking it could also be a fuel pump issue as well. Hopefully the more mechanically inclined guys here can chime in with their suggestions. Good luck!

Mine did that .. it took like 5 seconds to start it.. sometimes longer. I though it was low fuel pressure but i took my plugs out and they worn very worn out and my so was my dis. Cap and rotar. I did a tune up .. plugs cap and rotar and it fires right up.... this is most likely your problem.

If you have any time/miles at all on this engine, you should start with a sparkplugs and rotor tune up. Would not hurt to take it out in the drive after dark and stare into the engine compartment with NO lights or flashlights on (looking for SPARK leaks).

AFTER those two..... if you still have issues......suspect fuel....

Fuel pumps lose their prime after they get old. Turn your key to "on" for a few seconds and then try to start, if it starts right up then the fuel pump losing its prime is likely the problem. If it still takes 3-5 seconds after turning the key on and then cranking, I would suspect an ignition problem.

Thanks for all the advice guys! I know it is not the fuel pump because I replaced that about 3-4 months ago. I am going to go ahead and change all the plugs first. If that does not change anything then I will go ahead and look at the Dis Cap and Ignition Coil. I might just have to replace all of them, because if it rains a lot then my jeep doesn't like to start. That leads me to assume (like you all said above) that it has to do with the dis cap/coil. I will keep you all updated and again, thanks so much!

I had the same problem with mine. It turned out it was the starter. Didn't figure it out till I took it to get looked at and that's what they came up with. Has them to replace it with a used one, and several months later did the same thing. I put a new one on myself and haven't had a problem since.
