YJ super hard to start

Two days ago it was a little hard to start. Had to crank it 10 mins and it finally started. Yesterday same thing but took twice as long to start and even had to jump it cause the battery died. Today I almost gave up. Took over 45 mins to finally get it to start. It will crank over fine. Sounds like it is trying to fire but won't start. Continued cranking and cranking and then smell a ton of gas. Barely acts like its even firing. If I hold the gas pedal to the floor it will try to fire but doesn't start. Finally 45 mins later and running the battery dead it started. The other days once it started it ran fine after I got it started. Today once I finally got it started it was idling a little rough and had a some hesitation while accelerating. And while I was driving i smelled a lot of gas. Once I got it running and ran it a little bit I could shut it off and it would start right back up. Have no idea what it is. The vehicle is a 1991 Jeep Wrangler 4.0 liter Automatic. Please help!!

Check your distributor cap for cracks.

Search "brain surgery" your capacitors could be getting weak in your computer.

Is this a sudden new development? How old is your gas? Do you live in a cold environment? Moisture in the gas perhaps... I ran into a similar problem with my other vehicle and it actually turned out to be the gas STATION I used. I used a different gas station than normal and then the car ran like crap, lost power, etc., but all was well after I went back to my normal gas station. Doesn't sound like that's your problem but just thought I'd share that experience. I run SeaFoam through my tank every couple of months or so and that seems to help too.

Yea it started 3 days ago. Don't think it's the fuel because I just put gas in it before it started doin this and out more fuel in it yesterday and I used the same places I always use. It has been really cold here lately. Today I went out to start it and although it wasn't as hard as yesterday it still took me about 20-30 mins to start it but it finally did start. The crazy thing is once I finally do get it started and I let it warm up I can shut it off and it will start right back up. I can even let it set an hour or two and it will still start. It's just when it sits overnight and I try and start it that's when it doesn't want to start. After the first 2-3 tries to start it there will be a strong odor of fuel and I have to hold the has pedal to the floor before it will start. The first two days when it gave me a hard time once it did start it ran fine but yesterday and today it was idling just a little rough. Today I took two different wires off the distributor and it really didn't seem to make a difference. Sounded the same so I'm thinkin it needs a tune up. Cap, rotor, wires and plugs. Which I'm gonna try tomorrow. Just weird that when I pulled the wires off the distributor it didn't really sound any different. Maybe a little but not much. So that's what's goin on as of now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

If you pulled a couple of different plug wires off and it didn't make much of a difference... defiantly time for a tune up!!

I will bet you find some very fouled spark plugs. Just understand that a fouled plug most likely caused by poor spark plug wires....GL

When you turn the key on does the (check engine light) come on or does it take some time to come on? Jeep will not start till "check engine" light comes on. Just turn the key to on but don't try to start, see if light comes on right away or takes a while. If it didn't come on right away then search "ecm brain surgery" on here for the repair.

I'm gonna change the cap rotor plugs and wires today. I did a little experiment yesterday. Once it started yesterday I let it warm up then shut it off and every couple hours I would start it and it would start right up. Let it run for a few and shut it off. Last night the last time I started it was about midnight and it started right up again. Then this mornin I came out and it started right up. It seems as long as it doesn't sit for more then 7-8 hours without being started it starts fine. Just when it sits all evening and night it won't start the next morning. I'm not sure about the check engine light because I think the bulb is burn out because it never comes on. Just the maint req light. But it hasn't worked since I got the jeep.

I just drove it this mornin and now it's really hesitating on acceleration!! Seems like whatever it is it's getting worse everyday. Ok well let me try tuning it up and see if that helps. I'm also gonna get a bulb for the check engine light because I know u can retrieve fault codes from the check engine light flashes. Thanks for everyone's help. Hopefully the tune up will fix it!!

Any chance it's a fuel pump issue? Starting to sound like my Jeep. It won't start without ether and runs like crap until it is warmed up and also tends to crap out when you apply gas. I had a new pump kicking around and intend to install it along with new cap, rotors, plugs and wires as soon as it isn't 8° outside.

Sounds like a fuel delivery issue to me. Go ahead & do the tune up as it probably needs it anyway. If the issue is still there, I would start inspecting fuel lines. You might have a leaking fuel line considering you mentioned a bad gas smell.
