I just recently bought a jeep 1991 yj 2.5l. I feel a little overwhelmed with what to do first. If anyone could help and suggest any repairs I should do right away so I won't be stranded on the hwy one day. Maybe any common problems? Thanks

Start with a basic tune-up

  • NGK or Champion plugs
  • Wires
  • Dist Cap/Rotor
  • Fuel filter
  • Air filter
  • Oil change 10w30

Then work your way to changing out the other fluids

For the AX5 transmission use GL4 (Not 5) 75w90 | GL4 Amsoil is my fluid of choice, but there are many opinions.

Differentials: 75w90
Transfer Case: Multi-Vehicle ATF
Cooling System "this one is just as important" & buy only Mopar stat, cap, sensors

Your post put me in a time machine to 2012...critical things I wish I knew that took me a while to correct/fix and resulted in 400+ posts here.....:

What IRQ and NUBBY said.
change the transfer case fluid.
change tranny fluid.
change diff fluid. buy permatex and gaskets/gasket maker. get a feel. bolts might break off but all necessary.
Buy a Haynes or a Chiltons quick.
All this is cheap/cheapish.
Tighten the skid plate that holds up your tranny. If you go offroad do this every couple months.
Wipe down the undercarriage with old rags and check the next day where any leaks might be.
Tighten and inspect all the front end linkage (tie bar, drag link, damper etc etc) and note anything "off". I've replaced front end stuff but don't know crap about front end stuff. Use gut.

Exterior and interior cosmetic stuff---not a concern right now. Dial in a functional jeep first. Like poster said above, fuel sys, fluids, ignition syst first. You won't go broke shoring this stuff up. That comes later.

BREAKS! check your Breaks, and check your Steering, if it stops running you can pull over, But if you can't Stop you in are in a World of sHITZ, and It is always good to be able to Steer Your Car!
