Brown Mountain, North Carolina

As proud Floridians with a new Jeep Wrangler we set out for North Carolina to tackle the Brown Mountain trails. Great trails, almost as good as those in Moab, UT we've Jeeped with trail modified rent-a-Jeeps.

First, the National Park Service directions are terrible. We wasted 50 miles rolling around the area to find the entrance to the park.

Here is the Park Service directions and trail map....
http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_...rdb5366048.pdf

And here is what they DON'T tell you that you need to know. First, from Morganton, you do head North on 181 towards Linville BUT Linville is 22 miles past where you need to turn!!!!

From Rte 64 and 181, head North on 181 for about 11 miles. Keep an eye out for a nice, old, white clapboard church, Smyrna Baptist. Turn right there. That is Brown Mountain Beach Road but the sign has been hit by a truck and you won't see it. Go exactly 3.6 miles (the Park Service says about 5 miles) and you will see the small entrance sign to your left.

Great parking in front of the trail. The website I pasted has a good trail map that let's you know where the Jeep trails are since there are a number of trail bike trails that initially look wide enough but get pretty skinny.

Some great, steep washouts, rocks, sand, some mud. A good mix. We have a number of good scrapes on the skid plate and crossbar of our stock Sport Wrangler. Lot's of fun...did 7 miles of trail is only 4 hours! That was about as fast as we could go and keep all of the axles on the truck.

Saw some folks camping in a few of the clearings, didn't see any Rangers or Ranger stations. Trails were well posted.

Beautiful scenery. A nice spot if you are in the area....about 60 miles East of Asheville, NC. The bargain with my wife....we'll go see the Biltmore Mansion....then go Jeeping!
