DC Area Trails

Hey guys, I'm relatively new to off-roading. Is there some type of training course I can take to familiarize myself on what to do and how to use my Jeep on the trail?

Contact the local jeep or 4x4 club and ask them about beginners' courses. Also, if there is a local off-road park, you can check with them, especially if it is a private park. You might want to post this in the D.C. Forum, http://www.wranglerforum.com/f96/.

Any trails in the DC area won't be legal..You'll have to drive at least an hour depending on where you are to get to anything legal. Unless you know someone with land and is willing to let you drive all over it. I'll send you a PM with more info on the "local" Jeep Club.

I hear the SE side is a good urban obstacle course

Seriously, I'm 20min south of you and there's nothing within an hour of me either. My club NOVAJeepers go down to Harrisonburg to the George Washington Natl. Forest. There are plenty of legal trails down there that range in difficulty.

My advice would be to meet up with a local or veteran of the trails and wheel together.

I am in the same situation as you are. We bought the Jeep so we don't get caught in the "Snowmageddon" situation again. But now we have a jeep with no knowledge of how it operates.

Big Dogs is going to have an Open Trail Run for the NJ Wheelers I think the weekend of the 15 Sept. Some of my friends and jeepers from SoMD are going if you want to join us. Its in Gore, VA. I drove from Burke last time and it was like 1hr and 30 mins or so. I drive slow on I66.

Thanks htkrph. I'm itching to go but I have a four month old. A call to the Pediatrician nixed the idea of bringing the baby along.

Maybe later when the Baby is older.

There are some very novice friendly trails near Woodstock VA. Also in the GW National Forest. Try this:

George Washington & Jefferson National Forests - OHV Riding & Camping
