driving into green sand beach hawaii

I will be on the big island in early may and want to drive to green sand beach. Is anyone familiar with this drive? I heard you need a key and permit from the DHHL.

It's been seven years since I was there, but you didn't need any permit. Definitely worth the trip. Most people hike to it though. It's about 2-3 mile hike off road. The trails are basically 8-10" deep tire ruts. You can drive out to the edge of the cliff overlooking the beach, then hike down. Have fun.
