Was that Sweetwater off Hwy 20? I drove some trails Saturday off Sweetwater. There was a couple steep & deep ruts and some pretty nice hill descends too.

There was 4-5 of us in JKs. The trails I was on were definitely tight.. I havent washed it yet to know if there are any permanent scratches. As long as they dont get to the metal I'll consider it custom pinstriping by mother nature. I didnt buy it to mall crawl.

The trails were nice though, most of them ended at the lake one way or another. From what I was told it used to be harder to get to. Someone has started bringing in tons of gravel and filled in some the ruts at the beginning of the trails.

From what I understand there are some local groups that are taking care of the area. I liked these trails, some pretty harry hill climbs, but good stuff.

Man i wish this was a west coast thing, cuz im sure i would have my rig by then. But the 1931 miles from here to Harlan just doesnt seem to practical. I will be very interested to watch this thread build and see the end results/pics. and im guessing 59 pages when its all done

(according to mapquest it would be a 30hr drive, but thats probably in some little honda or something )

How much do you gys think it would cost to ship 5 37" tires? I found a government liquidation sale and theyre selling sets of 37's for $50...yes, ALL 5! But they are comming from Jackson Florida. So anyone got any kind of idea on shipping for them?

I would guess it would be somewhere around $200-$250 even at that rate, $300 for 5 37" tires is a deal.

Thats what I was thinking. They arent used either...brand spanking new! They are a military good year tire with an awesome looking tread. Since Im gonna need new rims for the 60's this summer anyway I think I may just buy some 16.5's (rim size for those tires) and call it good. Then I simply HAVE to get the tires to keep my TJ rollin!

Who makes 16.5" rims? I always thought the military did them that size to keep soldiers from stealing tires and selling them to non-mil types. Those are HUMMV tires. Hard to believe they are being surplused instead of shipping them overseas, we had a hard time getting tires at our camp sometimes. Nothing quite like running 80 mph convoys on 37's down the freeway.

I've seen those.. I'm pretty sure the sets I saw in Jacksonville were new but beyond their military shelf-life. There were other sets at Elgin AFB that were deemed H7-unrepairable.. I would stay away from the H7s unless you could confirm they are beyond their shelf-life as well, rather than ripped sidewalls.

Congrats on a good find. I hope they serve you well. I'm not sure what the shelf-life of tires is, but new tires that cheap is an awesome deal!

Yea, the ones I found wernt even past shelf life. And since they are only gonna cost me a few hundred bucks shipped Im not super worried about them. Speaking of which, how do military tires wear on the road? Bad I would presume eh? lol

Deal is falling thru, so it looks like I will be going the Super 35 kit and SYE option. Which is fine since this is my daily driver.

Guess it all works out then. But that rubi case would have been sweet to have. I know Im welding the front but Im still trying to decide if I want to put a spool in the rear of a detroit locker??? Suggestions.

Detroit will make your rig more maneuverable on and off road, but you may want to consider welding the rear, and putting the Detroit in the front...

hmm. I was gonna weld the front because Im only in 4WD when off road. So when I was on road Id be in 2WD and have the hubs unlocked (79' ford truck axles had manual lockouts) and it would drive just like an open carrier as well as create no drag on the internals. Then off road I could lock the hubs and kick it in 4WD to have a locked up front end. You think it would work out if I welded the front and the rear? Because then Id really only feel the effects of the rear being locked all the time. How does a welded rear feel on the pavement? This is my DD after all and its gonna be driven all the way to KY most likely. Unless my father finishes the land rover in time and decides to come with, then they will all be trailered down. So what would you do? Maybe a just a lower grade locker like a lock rite? Or a tru trac even though its just really good limited slip.

What size tires are you going to be running? I would think that just doing a lockrite, or something similar would be fine in heavy axles unless you are going crazy, like up to 40"+ with your tire size, or running big-block power through... Then you can do a full carrier locker later. (or not) Just my two cents. I know guys that daily drive a spool in the rear, and other than the fast tire wear, no ill effects.

Yea, I dont want to rip my tires up faster than usual which is why I was thinking I wouldnt do a spool/weld the rear. It is a heavy duty axle though and Im only gonna be running 36-37" tires after the axle swap so I will probably just go with a lockrite or something of the sort. Im sticking with the stock power plant too until it needs a rebuild. Then Im gonna stroke it, but at 70K on the clock right now that is probably a ways off. Also found a disc conversion for the rear so I can drop some weight and those crappy drums at the same time. You think a 15" wheel will fit the discs inside it?
