Hollister Hills

Been there a few times. It's about a 40 minute drive from home. When you go, take a friend with a second vehicle with you, as they will likely turn you away with out a backup for extraction. If you work at it, you can get in trouble, but mostly just a moderate experience. Every one should do it at least once.

The times that I went there, it was with a group. One club gathering and several safety seminars, as I recall. The facility is run by the state of California and in spite of that, is very well run by people who know what they are doing and enjoy their job. Since they can not extract vehicles on state property with state owned equipment (by law), they require a minimum of two vehicles per entry. They may make exceptions on a busy day with lots of other vehicles to help you if needed, but I would not count on it. You may want to call the entrance station for more information, to save a wasted trip.
