Beautiful, didn't realize Kodiak had wind turbines but haven't been there in 10 yrs...love it.

They have had them for a little while. Just had three installed last year.

Is there anything special you guys do to your jeeps besides block heaters for the cold winters?

Is the haul road open traffic or do you still have to get a permit to go all the way?

Here in Kodiak we don't have to do anything like that to our Jeeps. It doesn't get cold enough for that. When I lived in Delta Junction (about 115 miles southeast of Fairbanks) in the interior of AK, I had an oil pan, tranny, block and battery heater. We had to plug our vehicle in if it was going to be left out for more than an hour. The coldest I saw it was -72 and the norm up there during the winter is -20. AKA, t-shirt weather.

Good god, how do you guys survive..!? What is the normal attire? I lived in Buffalo NY for 17 years and am over that cold, I now live in sunny Florida.

Ha ha. Like I said, in Kodiak the norm in the winter is around 20 above but the interior is SUPER cold!!!!! You just get use to it like anything else...........well, not really.

actually, when i was facing the choice between moving to Utah and Alaska, in the end I chose Utah instead... partially due to the psychology of thinking that there are too many trails/ wheeling locations,, to the point that I may one day get tired of it..

Yes 13jwrangler, it has been years since I flew in Alaska but I used to fly into Kodiak. I flew for SouthCentral Air and brought your UPS packages in there. I loved flying in there and sneak out of the pass for some bear watching on my way back to Kenai. I was ATC as well at Elmendorf many years ago. Great job, loved it. Is Kodiak still FAA or contract?

That's awesome to hear. Kodiak is now a contract tower. Love my job and love where I live. I work with a guy who use to work at Elmo. Small world.

Lihue? I think my boss might know your old boss, ha ha. Flying into Kodiak can be a pain though. The wx changes so quick!!! It's the craziest place I've ever worked wx wise.

Last name Brooks, Kodiak was one of the toughest places I have ever flown IFR into, loaded up with ice on the arc, had to go missed, almost didn't make it back to Homer....Puckerrrrrrr...

Yeah, there's not really a good place to divert to around here. You make it in or you don't. We have been IFR for literally 3 days straight now. Ain't nothing like it.
