Right now I have a 4cyl jeep I haven't takin it off roading yet but trust me I plan on it. But I hear alot of guys talking saying 4cyl being to weak for off roading. I plan on getting it on rocks mud and not steep slopes but some hills in your opinion is a 4cyl to weak for that.

I've never driven one, but I have seen several 4 bangers out there doing the same thing as the 6 & 8 cylinders. Many a 4 cyl. Toyota's would have something to say about that as well. You should be fine.

Gear it right and you should be able to hold your own on the trails.

The 4 bangers don't do all that bad on the trails. For muddin, driving over rocks and stuff you'd be fine. Just set your T-case in low and keep the power to the wheels. Real steep slopes or high hill climb just be careful on. Be sure to let me know how your trip goes! If you have any other questions feel free to ask. Phil

From a guy with a 4 banger I can tell you that those guys saying that a 4 banger is weak don't have a fricken clue! Now I will add that if they are climbing steep sandy hills all day, yea a bigger motor would not hurt but it is not required.

Since getting my Jeep back in March I have gone on some great trips with a lot of different people and some will look at my little YJ and wonder how well I will do. Well at the end of the day I have gone everywhere they have gone with the exception of really deep ruts and rocks, this includes the I6 and V6 guys.

My problem, if you can call it that, is I need bigger tires and at least 1 locker to handle the rocks and ruts like they do. So to me I don't have any problems and I am finding that I am challenging my driving every time I head out and more importantly, I am finding out just how well a mostly stock YJ will really do BEFORE I start throwing big money at it.

So I say go out with some friends and slowly learn what your Jeep will and won't do, you will not regret it one bit.

once you learn how to drive a 4 banger is a hell of a lot of fun on the trails. Sure you'll bounce off the rev limiter at times but thats ha;f the fun of a 4 banger. I'm linking my rig, 1 ton axles sticky 37s and keeping the 2.5 and the 5 speed.
