My JKU is stock and have had no issues beach driving or with clearance. Momentum is your friend out there in the loose sand

It is truly a one of a kind driving experience, not big time wheeling but about as much fun if not more so. The south side just past the ferry to ocracoke island (spelling is jacked im sure) is a nice long strip of beach that you can ride as well. It seems less watched down there and I was able to have a little more fun slinging some sand around due to it not being a residential area i guess. I have heard however that as of the 2012 year they are going to start charging for beach driving access which is a sad day indeed. Ive heard $50 per week pass so plan on that also. You will love riding the beaches and I suggest taking some wood and having a campfire while your out there, amazing fun.
heres a pic of my old '97 at that location. i didn't even bother to air down and i was passing ford explorers with burried axles

go to Corolla ... just follow the posted rules and follow the trails. Dont go into the dunes unless youre on the road.. etc.. Its really nice down there, and there are some nice big holes down there back behind the dunes if you ride around for a little while.. i've seen somebody bury their Jeep in one of them.. Just follow the rules, have fun and be safe and youll be fine.

Heading down there tomorrow! I'm definitely going to check out Corolla! Added bonus, based on the weather report, I'll be topless and doorless all week!

Ninja edit: Anybody ever hear of folks messing with topless Jeeps there?

i think it depends where you go really. staying at a motel/hotel, i'd be leery, condo or house, fine. been going down there since '89. as always, common sense is a solid guide.

i have family that live there year round and we I go down quite a few times during the year.. never had any issues with anyone messing with my soft top. There are only a few hotels down there, and they are all in good locations.

Thanks for the feedback JaysGolf and silver rubi! Very good to hear! It seemed like "fish in a barrel" to me. It wouldn't matter, I'll take everything out and leave the doors unlocked. It's going to be a fantastic week!

We just came back from there. Saw the horses every time we drive in the beach north of corolla on 12. Also, an excellent place for shells. Saw more whole and large shells than I have ever seen before!

Yeah I'm going to make a day trip to the North Shore, $100.00 is BS for a week worth of beach driving, they already are squeezing us by making check-in at friggin 4pm-6pm and check out at 10am. Been going there 15 years pretty much fed up with it.

We planned on hitting the causeway at about 12-1'ish but got hung up. Ended up getting there about 5:45p, total trip time from Baltimore, 10 hours! For a second there, I almost regretted buying the manual. Lol!

We come from NY and to avoid what you went thru we usaully leave at midnight and drive thru. its usually a 10-12 ride for us. Sucks to get there by noon and wait around to get into the houses.

I think I'd rather sit in an air conditioned restaurant than that freaking traffic! You could run up to Corolla and drive on the beach until the rental opens!

I did forget to mention that I had a minor issue. The first night there, I took the hard top and doors off and drove a bit. I came back to the house, put the doors back on and put the trail cover on it. I came out in the morning and the cover was askew along with the glove box and center console being left open. Not a big deal, I left everything unlocked and had no valuables in there. We called the police and our whole street had been reporting the same issues with all kinds of vehicles. I was nervous but the next 3 nights, nothing else happened. We think it was just kids looking for cash.

Driving on beach in Corolla

We enjoyed driving up the beach at Corolla NC. Went down some of the roads where the rental houses were and the the sand was pretty deep and loose. We even had to do a water crossing about 20 feet across and about 18" deep. That was my first water crossing and I went too fast. I'll know to go slower next time. Anyway it was lots of fun.

Yep got home and took it to the Jiffy Spray. Washed it good under there and then drove home in a rain storm. I'm good to go.

P.S.
Actually the water crossing was a low spot with runnoff from rain so it wasn't as salty as driving through the waves which we didn't do.

The sand in Corolla and Carova are good for someone who just wants to drive down the beach until they find a great spot. Pull up in the middle of the beach, hit the tunes, pop a cold one and waste away in margaritaville. The deep sand can be a challenge due to the traffic or slow drivers. Keep the momentum in the deep stuff. Careful of your speed. We were down there in June and the cops were heavily patrolling because a few weeks earlier some jackass was driving like an idiot, way too fast. He ended up hitting an killing a horse. So now the cops are stepping it up.
Above all have fun!

The locals, along with the horse patrols down in Corolla/ Corova look after the horses.. Driving recklessly , hurting any of the horses will get you in a lot of trouble. There are normally 3-4 police patrolling the beach at certain time between dawn and dusk, more on holiday weekends, on ATVs, in pickups, and SUVs. There are signs posted before you get on the sand of the laws while driving on the beach.

As weird as this sounds-- to the locals, the horses are like family.
