I'm heading down June 8th, so close!

do i need to worry about disconnecting the front sway bar? I havent done the mod yet, so it would be a last second thing I will have to worry about if so.

I will be down there June 8th also.

Shouldn't have to worry about it. Mostly sandy stuff from what I saw. But didn't go too hardcore as I was by myself.

I'm going down there tomorrow. Last years I think I remember seeing people in the back of pickups. Do you think I would get stopped for having some one in the back of a JKU?

I didn't, but stuck to as much hard pack as I could and stayed away from anything that looked tricky.
I did spin pretty bad once on those back roads but was able to keep the momentum up.
We also saw a JK buried up to its rear axle on the main beach in the way out! Looked like plenty of help was getting it out though.

We had a great time, planning on going back before we leave.

How crowded does the off road parts in Corolla get? I'm heading down tomorrow, but staying in Kill Devil Hills area. Trying to figure out if I need to leave early to get a good spot and not get crowded out on the beach.

technically speaking that area is actually considered a continuation of beach road 12, so unless there is an event of some sort, its a thoroughfare (just without the yellow line).

from KDH, it's a good hours ride as well. when i stay in nags head, i go south toward ocracoke, there are no houses down there, so that may be more what you are after, as far as "getting a spot" and spending the day there, on the beach.

Pictured is my old jeep by the inlet bridge..

Then and Now by HPGolfer101, on Flickr

i dont know though if that area of beach, down by ocracoke, is still "free access". thought i remember reading you needed permits now... not sure though.

but up by corolla is not restricted, again cause its technically RT 12.

thanks for the reply, pics look great! i worry more for my JKU than my old TJ, just feels heavier, less nimble. it's also my daily driver, i'm not trying to get it FUBAR.

Okracoke requires a permit and I think they only allow off road access a few months or of the year and it end in April. But thanks for the info, I'll keep in mind the hour drive.

We took a horse tour on Monday, and went back out on our own Wednesday. The tour was great, but not needed to see horses, we saw them readily when we went on our own.

Just returned from another trip to the NC outer banks. We normally stay at Naggs Head since it's sorta central and we can hit Hatteras or Corolla in about an hour either way.

I highly recommend Corolla...

Make sure to see the horses...

Just got back from NC. Trucking around on the beach was hella fun. I need to do it more often.

Yep. But I got there a bit late in the afternoon and the tide was coming in. Didn't get to stay long. Ended up running around the trails, looking for horses.

cool, did you get to see some? and low tide reveals tree stumps, so that may have been a blessing in disguise if you didn't know they were there

Yep, ran across a group of them a little ways in the trail. Took a bunch of pics, just haven't pulled them from the camera.

Totally didn't expect stumps to be there. The tide was just coming in and I was being a wuss going in by driving like 10mph, so I managed to avoid them. On the way out tho, I manned up a bit and hit 20.

We took our LJ out on the beach at Corolla (see pic), haven't been back since I got the JKU. With the LJ, we didn't air down at all.

How many of you air down for the beach, and how many don't?

I was going to air out the tires but decided to just go for it and see what would happen. I went through just fine (on 33s)

Had an amazing time! Didn't bother airing down. Had a little stuttering on the soft stuff on the trails behind the dunes while going up hills, but nothing crazy... Going through the washouts was a blast

Headed down next week for a late summer trip. Plan to take my tj out on NC12 since we are staying in Corolla Light. Have gone on the jeep tours before so that helps with knowing the lay of the land. This thread has been helpful too. Was planning to air down but likely won't bother after seeing so many ppl have no issues. Will post some pics up here.
