Places to Wheel

I was wondering if we could get a sticky started that would contain directions, maps, and difficulty ratings to places that we've all wheeled before. Not trail pics from runs but specific info from any particular trail. I was thinking eventually we'd have a large database of places to wheel for different states since there's so many legal trails out there that are not easy to find off the road or on the internet. What do you guys think?

I try not to think. It hurts.

But seriously, it could be a sticky in the trail pics section. It would even work just to list the places, we can always do a mapquest.
I also would like to see somewhere on the site that listed members by state. That way we could hook up with someone near us occasionally and for wheeling trips.

We've talked about this before between the moderators and kind of put it off until we had more membership to make it worth it.

The way we do it on a different forum I am on is that we have a Trail Section Moderator that you submit your writeup to and they will polish it and post it for you in a closed thread. That way we don't have people posting up on the actual trail info itself making them very long.

Lets here some more discussion on this topic. I'm sure that we can put something together based on a consensus from the Forum.

How about creating a template of somekind so that people can input just the essential info. Kind of like another forum where they have a template for product reviews, we could have something like that

All you would need is City, State, Mile Marker or landmark, and brief directions. Plus trail write up of course. Weather its mud, sand, or rock.

I'd love to see this. I think it would help some of us more timid newbies to get out there.

How about making a sticky with Google Earth coordinates on it?

Now there's two ways to look at the statement I am going to make and please don't take it negatively because it is in no way intended to include the responsible wheeler be them new or veteran.

I am not really for posting directions and such to most trails around the country. Places like off road parks are fine because you have to funnel thru a distinct area first. If we started posting directions or GPS coords to a lot of the popular wheeling areas in our states then we run the chance of even more irresponsible people seeing them and taking rigs out there that have no business being in those areas. Locally here in AZ we have decided on our own board to not post up exact directions. We have trail write ups with generalized area locations and then if someone needs to know how to get to a specific spot they can either PM the user that wrote the review or ask for directions to the trail and someone will get them where they need to go.

We have to be very careful with the land we recreate on these days. The environmental ecco-terrorists do monitor our boards and forums and use that against us whenever possible. More and more people are pitching in to save our wheeling spots these days by being members of ORBA, Tread Lightly, ARRA etc.... and it makes me happy to see it in the signatures on this board also.

Like I said above. This is my opinion on the matter and I am all for a trail write section. It works great on our local board and we have pictures from each trail and that helps others know if their rig can/should be in there.

^^^ Actually you've made a VERY good point ^^^

We should really re-think the idea of posting up wheeling spots for the whole world to see.

Which, unfortunately, also leads those of us who are new to be shut out and in turn may cause the loss of a needed voice in keeping the trails open. But, cest'la vi.

I'm all for not letting the world see it. however is there a way for 'members only' to veiw, kinda like posting, you have to put in your user name and password. and only people with a certian # of posts can view, something to keep out the riff raff. Being in CT there isn't much around that isn't private property seeing as my state isn't much wider than some trails are long out west.

Tiny, I'm not in anyway shooting down a trails section. I think it would be great to see the wheeling spots that people use across the country. I'm only saying that if we were to put (take a right at MM 125 and then the trail head is 2 miles down on the left) then we are asking for irresponsible individuals to use the information that we put out there against us by misusing our trails. Instead of the example above I believe it would be more responsible to put on a trail description (California, Johnson Valley) and then if someone is looking to visit that area they can contact said individual for more details.

We cannot stop what people put on the internet. We can however help to educate anyone who will listen that we have to fight to keep our trails open. And on Wranglerforum we want to be a voice of that fight and not one that leads to more closures. Land use issues are something that I am very passionate about and very involved in here in AZ. We have a number of fights on our hands right now and we are struggling to catch up to the numbers and organization of the opposition.
