So I have this totally stock '99 TJ that I just bought, and next June my wife has a conference to attend in Seattle. I'm going to load up the camping gear, drop her off at the Atlanta airport, then head west. By the time I get to Seattle the conference will be over and we can do a little sight seeing on the way back. The general route will be WA, OR, ID, UT, AZ, NM, TX, then home to NC. I need suggestions on where to go and what to see.
I'm retired from the Army, so I'm no stranger to driving military vehicles in questionable terrain. Once I even drove a VW bug from Ft. Bragg down through Mexico and Central America to the Panama Canal Zone, and sank it in a river on the way, but that's another story. After retiring I worked for a military contractor in Saudi Arabia for three years, and while I was there I drove in the Empty Quarter, down the Hejaz Railway, and all over the desert within a couple hundred km of Riyahd. There was both deep sand and rock desert, and I did all my driving there in a 2-door 4WD GMC Yukon with big tires and long range fuel tanks. The only addition I'm going to make on my Jeep is a rack around the spare that'll take a shelf for gear and two 5 gallon Jerry cans. I have no interest in climbing rocks or wading in the mud, so I'm doing nothing in that direction.
What I'm interested in is scenery, old Indian ruins, and other historical sites located in the back country that I can get to with my stock TJ. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
