I started a thread a while back: http://www.wranglerforum.com/f274/boulder-city-idaho-a-trail-worthy-of-badge-of-honor-912562.html and people really enjoyed the run. So much so that I am making it a 3 day 2 night overland trip. It will take place on August 28 - 30 starting in Hailey, Idaho and ending in the back country between Pine, Idaho and Fairfield, Idaho.
You will be responsible for your own food, tents and even toilets.
DAY 1: Will meet at either Timmerman Hill Rest Area or Goode Motors Jeep Dealership in Hailey. I will know if we have access to their lot on July 22nd and if we do just arrive around 10AM.
If you are early, just enjoy the local shops or go into the dealership if you need and parts or service. We will leave at 11AM and head up through Ketchum, Sun Valley and up to Boulder Creek Trail. From the dealership we have 25 miles of pavement to the staging area.
Depending on how many vehicles we have will dictate our camp site. If we camp at the base of the trail we will have access to toilets at a campsite down the road and it will make for an easier morning and day 2. If we camp up top you are on your own for bathrooms. The trail generally takes 2.5 hours to get up to the top of Boulder City where you can explore the old mill or go further up to the lakes. It is a technical trail and if you own a stock unlimited you may have a tougher time due to the low break over angle.
You can definitely ride with someone that has a more capable rig.
That will allow you to take more pictures and video anyway. The ride down should take about 2 hours and is a little easier if you avoid the bypasses. I would like to say that there will be zero breakage but that seldom happens so we need to band together and help each other. All said and done we are looking at about 6 hours and can be back at the bottom and eating dinner at 6PM if we camp at the bottom of the trail. That night should be nice and cool and a great time to share stories and pictures from that day. Camp fires should be allowed by the forest service.
You can make breakfast at camp or head back into Ketchum and enjoy one of the several restaurants in town. While there be sure to do some shopping or site seeing. We will meet around noon at this sign on Warm Springs Road past Bald Mountain Ski Resort.
We should be able to continue day 2 at 12:30PM. This road is a maintained Forest Service Road and everyone should be able to enjoy this relaxing drive through the Sawtooth National Forest over Dollarhide Summit and into the Smoky Mountains. There will be several areas where you can pull over and take some photographs/video along the way.
We will stop at Warswick Hot Springs and be able to use the restroom there. Be sure to remember where the hot springs is because you may want to come back here in the evening and use the 104 degree +- pools. From here we will keep on the road and go to the Big Smoky River. We will follow this river until it joins the Boise River and down to Lightfoot Bar. We will cross the river and make camp here.
This is a great place as you can spend the remainder of the day fishing, hiking, tube the river about 3/4 mile to the Big Hole which is a great swimming spot that also has a restroom, or just relax under the big pine trees. Don't forget about Warswick's! The next morning is all yours. You can continue down to Pine and Featherville, head back to Ketchum, or instead go over Couch Summit and into Fairfield. Should be a great time for all.
Those pictures have me rethinking my previous no answer in my build thread. Damn! In any case, I love the idea of just inviting Jeepers up to your neck of the woods for a trail ride. Neat idea.
I wish I lived closer! I love the pics and the attention to detail on this write up! I got pretty excited just by reading about this trail! I will see if the lil'lady is willing and report back...
Please do. This will be the inaugural run and with the news that was reported today will continue for many years to come. And with zero entrance fee, will continue to grow in participation.
It's official: Boulder-White Clouds bill passes Senate, goes to Obama | Letters from the West | Idahostatesman.com
For motorized vehicle users nationwide. We have achieved the lesser of two evils. Tree huggers from around the country tried to have President Obama use the power of the Antiquities Act to create a 500,000 acres National Monument in this area to keep all motorized use out of here. Instead, citizens came together to create something much smaller and still allow protect much of the beauty of Idaho. HUGE WIN!
I agree that something needed to happen but at the same time you can't take something away from people that want to enjoy the area but can no longer do so by way of foot.
When I went up to Boulder City in my Jeep Wrangler Unlimited on the Fourth of July, I met 17 UTV/ATV's and the vast majority were older Americans. I did not ask but I would put money on the fact that most of them were Veterans. I personally served in the Marines in the 90's. My Uncle served in Vietnam. My Father-in-Law served in the 60's. My Grandfather served in WWII, and my Great Grandfather served in WWI. Even though my Great Grandfather died 33 years ago all of us served to protect our great Country from the tyranny of foreign evils. But we also served to keep what we love available not only to us but also our citizens. And part of that is the outdoors. I was involved in an accident in the outdoors that dislocated both knees and unable to participate in sports including hiking. Taking away the ability to enjoy the outdoors from Veterans, the elderly, and the disabled is a travesty that should never happen just because a few little pricks don't like the sound engines in the forest or have to move over on the trail for a mountain biker for a few moments in time.
So keep fighting that good fight to keep your trails open too. Not just for yourself, but for Veterans like me that have no other way of enjoying them.
BE SURE TO MAKE IT TO TECHNICAL OVERLAND 2015.
Rebecca and I are looking for an Overland competition like a 4 day 3 night rally style with level 3+ obstacles for our very capable 2013 Sahara "Hazardous" . Not interested in roads, rednecks, and easy trails. $ is not an issue. Is anyone aware of anything in the whole country other than that Vermont Overland Trophy BS?
Only 13 days away! Now that President Obama has signed the SNRA+ into law the Boulder Creek Trail and others will stay open. Technical Overland now has now worries about making this an annual event.
Just about a week to go. Made the move to Boise about two weeks ago so I will be at the Chevron by the Outlet Mall on the east side of town around 7Am and leave there at 7:30. Anyone in the area is more than welcome to join. I will be attending the High Desert 4x4 meeting Tuesday night to talk about the overland trip too.
High Desert 4x4 Club is allowing me to talk about Friday's Technical Overland 2015 tomorrow night at their monthly meeting. If you would like to be at the meeting let me know.
Excited to let everyone know that the inaugural Technical Overland sounds like it is going to be a great success. And because of this are going to make two runs up to Boulder City on Friday the 28th. I have talked to quite a few "good ole' boys" and they have never done/heard of a Boulder Night run. Until now! We are still going to leave the Timmerman Hill Rest Area at 11 AM on Friday, August 28th and head for Boulder City. Once there we will leave the staging area and head towards the trail head to setup camping sites and leave for the top. I expect to be on the trail around 12:30/1 o'clock. We should be back between 6 and 7 and turn around to do it all over again. It will be more difficult and will have to be very cautious but a once in a lifetime opportunity. Do not miss this one.
Big thanks to Skywgn1 for organizing a great run. The night run up was awesome! With partial cloud cover and a full moon it provided a great setting for a trip to a ghost town.
The overland the next day was great scenery, great company, and great times!
For those that missed out I would highly recommend a trip up Boulder City as it is a great run.
Sorry to miss it, but there was no possibility of driving from here during the storms we were having. As soon as 2016s is posted, I'm putting it on my calendar.
So i need to know who will be at albertsons so we dont leave someone behind or wait for someone who is leaving later.

I will add to the list as i hear.
