tiny, cain, and Unlimited take Sarge out to the desert...

That's right. Unlimited, Cain and I got up extra early, met for coffee, and made our way down to the desert for Sarge's maiden voyage. Unlimited's lovely wife joined us (insuring Brian's got some good pictures).

This would have been a perfect picture had I noticed Unlimited's jeep was set up to STAND OUT!

As usual, it was beautiful down there even though we drove through some pretty lousy weather to get to the sunny skies.

Sarge did great...

More pictures coming...

Let me guess...the stopping for coffee was Tiny's idea? Nice pictures. Looks like fun. Wish I could drive my Jeep.

The desert is gorgeous, especially this time of year. We're thinking of heading back down today for a little sight-seeing.

Yeah, the place was breathtaking! Sorry I didn't get better pics. I have to say, the Sarge did well except for a bracket that loosened up on the trail and the fact that he started bleeding oil. Oh and don't forget that because of a motor mount that is out, he shattered part of his fan shroud. So, he's tucked away in the garage and I will start wrenching again on Monday!

All I have to say is it was a GREAT day! Thanks Mr and Mrs Unlimited! You guys rock!
What a blast we had! I can't wait to do it again!

Sorry, couldn't help it........ Mine's longer!

What a truely awesome day it was. It was great to see the Sarge in action. You guys only get to see the pictures, but I can tell you from first hand experience that the Sarge is an awesome rig and Cain has done an exceptional job on it. When people come up to you on the trail and say how awesome your Jeep is, you know you've done something right.

Thank you again Tiny and Cain for allowing us to come along on the Sarges check out run. My wife and I had a great day in the desert with you (not to mention afterward ) I'll post my pic's later today.

Where is that? I would definitely want to try that place out.

I'm actually heading out to Anza Borrego tomorrow, after seeing the pics from your guys adventure I had to try it. I know its short notice but anyone in San Diego is welcome to join us.

Nice Jeeps BTW, Sarge looks awesome.

Hey Tiny, I noticed you got a new bumper, how did you have your hi lift mounted on there before?

More:

Tiny having a great day.

The Sarge out in the desert.

Cain likes to keep the Sarge meticulously clean. We had to stop several times on the trail so Cain could dust the Sarge off.

Poser!

Back through the last water crossing.

Washing the dust off the Sarge's undercarriage.

Overall, it was an outstanding day. I can't wait to do it again!

We were in Lower Cougar Canyon. To get there you go through the town of Borrego Springs on S22. One block past the traffic circle, head north. The pavement ends a few miles north of S22. That is where the trail starts.

I love the wheeling here!

And Sarge was God of the Trail. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE wanted to talk to Cain about him. They stopped us when we were airing up, they stopped us when we were at lunch, it was pretty cool.

I know the feeling. It's gets worse when they start asking for autographs.

Yeah. Mouse and tiny asked me what we should do today... It was either ride to the beach, find something cool to do around town or go down to the desert. Well, since Mouse had never been to the desert we all agreed to hop in the Jeep and ride down and show him around Fish Creek Wash and Sandstone Canyon. He LOVED it!

OK, here's the skinny on the round eyes the Sarge has now. I used the existing grille and took tons of measurements, made templates and took more measurements. I found headlight buckets that flush-mount (they are called "Bug-Eyes" and are designed to be mounted on a VW bug with a Baja Kit), found some 2 1/2 LED turn signal / parking lights on the site that start with E and ends with Bay, got some 12X18 sheet metal from Lowes and bought a couple of round sealed beams at the parts store. With template in hand I set out to cut the blanks used to cover the area where the squares were. I unbolted all the old stuff, covered the sides of the grille with my newly cut and pre-bent blanks and (get this) pop riveted the blanks in. The rivets give it a nice military feel and... Well, I tell you what... Tomorrow, after my new M151 headlight bezels come, I'll post up "close-up" pics of the whole thing.

Although it was fun to keep it a secret and see who noticed first!
