I'm not knowledgeable on CBs but why do you have to do this to use one? Can't you just buy one and then pick up the channel that others are on?

You can but without matching the antenna to the transmitter (tuning) you can lose some transmit power. In amateur radio the power levels (tens to hundreds of watts) can damage a transmitter if the impedance mismatch is great. Usually the transmitter will have fold-back protection.

The 4 to 5 watts in CBs shouldn't cause a problem, especially at the short range they are normally employed.

When you key on (press the button to speak) the vehicle becomes a larger antenna and since different cars/trucks are differen sizes they need to be tuned. Jeeps are one of the worst because they only get good singal forward (with antenna in the rear) or backwards (with the antenna in the front) You can just put it on but you run the rise of damanging the system. Plus your range will not be great at all either.

correct but the SWR (singale to wave ratio) will damage one quicker than watts)

Really fun time today with everyone. The TW trails are much more of a challenge than page road even though page has plenty of fun spots. Was great to meet everyone and be out in 104 degree temps today. Videos are uploading as we speak, check back tonight for them.

Check out the vids coming kjeeper. All were shot from the new gopro hero2 on my dash. They are quite long and you'll hear my daughter and lady talking throughout. There were some nervous giggles from time to tome.
