Bradshaw Trail and side trips. So Cal.

Last weekend I went off to explore some areas I have been and new trails I have not yet tried. A buddy backed out, so I went alone. All knew were I was going so I was not worried at all. Heck, I could almost be a hermit, but I still like my girlfriend.

I started out from Chiriaco Summit exit on the 10 (past Indio). Went south and took Red Canyon Jeep Trail to the Bradshaw Trail. The Bradshaw Trail is an old road the gold miners would use from La Paz Arizona, just past Blythe, to San Bernardino. The section between the Salton Sea and the river is still in place and all dirt.
When I got to the Bradshaw Trail, I went west about 1/2 mile to hit Red Canyon. Some good box canyons in this valley.

In Red Canyon, there is a side trip up Pinnacle Canyon...
Just a bit beyond where you can't drive, I hiked a bit and found water.

Back to the Bradshaw Trail. Headed east. At 1st you next to the old RR tracks, 2 miles, the trail makes a right. This is a good high speed trail. The Chocolate Mountain Ariel Gunnery Range is south of the trail, so every now and then you see these.

I couldn't get it in the Jeep.

At about 20 miles I came to Augustine Pass. The book I had said it made a loop and came back to this same trail. The BLM sign showed it stopping half way through. So I went to see. Nice rocky area, NO people.

I explored a side canyon and it got narrow. Looked like it would be fun for some of you.

Back to Augustine Pass. I passed an arch within cyn amd a formation the book called Lotts wife. And finally near the end I went through one of the Cholla Cactus forests. There are areas they are everywhere. Don't touch these, they will stick to you, your tires, your dog.

That was about 15 miles for the side trip, then back to the Bradshaw and headed east. You will notice along the side of the trails lots of old tracks. These are tank tracks from Pattons desert training. They are all over. At about 18 miles, I came to Wileys Well Road. Went right (south) about 5 miles then a right (south/east) another 12 miles. This was a destination I was shooting for. Hauser geode beds. It was getting dark, so I had to skip looking for rocks 'till the morning. Time to make camp.

I spent a few hours hiking to the various digs. Brought home some good rocks and small geodes. I will go back with some better digging equipment next time.

Went back to the Bradshaw Trail and headed west about 5 miles. There is a road to the right (north) Government Pass. My book said the road was washed out, but BLM map shows it, so I went. It is a straight trail that they made for the desert training. There was some good washouts but not too bad. Took my right to the I-10. I took the old road before the 10 and headed west. My last stop was Corn Springs. There is a campground 8 miles back, but I went to check out the Indian Petroglyphs. Some other old graffiti was added.

Got home about 5pm.
Fun trip.

Yes. You could do most of what I went through.
Now I also have a 4x4 Tundra, and I wouldn't attempt anything off the Bradshaw Trail.

Oh great... another MUST DO trip to add to my short list. Thanks for the great photos.

I was reading a review of the trail from 4 Wheeler and they comment about exploring south of the trail being in a Navy bombing range... is that where you shot a couple photos?

None of the pics were within the bombing range. It is well posted and best be kept out of. I was south of the trail, but I was way east of the range. Farther west the boundary is the road. Fun trip. Look up some books for info on side trips. "Gold road to La Paz" by Delmer G. Ross is the main one I used to research the trip.

The camp stove is not mounted there. It's the Teraflex tailgate table.

Oh nice!

Ive never seen it.

I have my Smitty GEAR bags mounted there, Id be tempted to put that on the out side though. Could be HANDY and I have a swing away tire carrier that would hide it. Hmmm.

Not in my long and low 4x4 09 Tundra. It would not fit or go over the rocks.
An old toy pu? Sure, that will work.

Yeah, I think there is a trip planned for November!

Would love to go to Corn Springs again, explore the road, and get some nice geodes.
