Mojave Road - Apr 20-22, 2012

This 3-day, 150-mile journey through the vast Mojave National Preserve retraces a path used by Native Americans and early settlers. Along the way, there's endless natural scenic beauty, and lots of historical man-made structures.

All set to leave the Avi Resort and Casino parking lot, and hit the trail.

Arriving at Fort Piute.

A look at the trail ahead of us.

The Penny Can. We drop a penny in it for good luck.

Stopping to enjoy some scenery after coming out of a Joshua Tree forest that rivals the one at Joshua Tree National Park.

Rock Spring

There are several petroglyphs to be found at Rock Spring.

Historical Bert Smith's rock house, above Rock Spring.

Entering another Joshua Tree forest, on our way to camp.

Our campsite on Day 1 has a magnificent panoramic vista.

A huge jack rabbit eyeballing my food.

Sunset hits.

A clear night to enjoy the stars.

Death Valley Mine

Stopped at Marl Spring

Day 3. Some views from camp, before departing.

Back on the trail. Soda Lake is in the distance.

On Soda Lake dry lake bed.

Arriving at Traveler's Monument. We add a rock that we picked up earlier along the trail to the rock pile for good luck in our travels.

There's a plaque in the middle of the rock pile, but we can't tell you what the inscription on the plaque says. It's a secret that's kept between only those who go there.

Arriving at Afton Canyon, and stopping to enjoy the scenery.

The first water crossing at Afton Canyon. Not too deep. Probably no more that 16-18 inches.

The second water crossing, even shallower. Maybe 8-10 inches.

Finally off the trail and airing up.

Whoa, great photos! Thanks for posting them.

Just got my JK this month. It needs some upgrades (don't they all? ). Once it's ready, my wife and I plan to do some trips like this one.

Wow, all the way from GA? I'd say every SoCal wheeler should definitely have this on their bucket list, but man if you're willing to come all the way from GA to visit our backyard I'd be honored to have you join me on a future run.

I got family in San Diego, so if I ever find myself down there with a Jeep I'll let you know for sure, I can't see myself driving mine all the way to Cali anytime soon though. Maybe if I happen to get a good month of leave before a deployment or something I'll make a road trip, hit Moab on the way too.

Awesome pics. Really like the night shots.
We run this trail every year. Next time you run it if your willing to change you camping spots run up into Caruthers Canyon and check out Camp Phallus. There's a pretty cool little trail there, with an old mine.Mojave Road Camping - Camp Phallus

Great Trail Report. Gets me excited for our trip.

Now this is the kind of Jeep trip I want to do!

Why are we just stuck with nasty muddy tight trails up here in Washington, I just like adventures!

Thanks Delano. I'll keep you in the loop for next time. It probably won't be until about a year from now though.
