Been wondering is there a way to guage how deep a water crossing will be? Went earlier last week and found it got really deep at the end. It seems once you're in, it is too late to back out. What do y'all do?

1) Yes that is Spongebob in the background, you win the prize
2) I only went as fast as I did into this because this was back on the way out. The first time I crawled in very slow and I wasn't too worried as I have a winch and plenty of trees to yank me out. Generally how I handle it water?...I go VERY slow on the way in and if my nose takes a dip that makes me nervous, I reverse out, hasn't failed me yet.

Thanks Chris. Didn't realize I could try backing out. Figured I would get stuck. All the best.

Going fast thru water no matter how deep can reek havoc.

A couple years back had a few people on a trail ride with us and they kept wanting to fly thru puddles to get a pic... and I kept warning them that might bite them later.

Well they got their pic alright but it also came at a cost... flooded the electronics, too much water shot up under the hood and killed it. And of course this was at the end of the day with the park closing, so they were freaking out how they would fix it and get home. I was staying overnight so towed it back to my site to work on and after a hour or so pulling plugs and checking wires, finally got it running.

If your not sure the depth... get out and check with long branch or stick to gauge or get an idea of how deep it is. Remember the jeep will sink in a little as well with the muddy bottom.

Well, I haven't found anything really great yet...aside from the fun that can be had at Silver Lake. I've tried tooling around in the Manistee State Forest, which I rarely found anything I couldn't drive the family sedan (or H2) through. Recently I went down looking for trouble in the Allegan State Game Area and found lots of mud. There were a few swampy areas that even though I had the winch and all, I took one look at it (being by myself) and turned right around. I did end up in one hole that I was very near having to winch myself out of. The Jeep dropped like a rock into it and you pretty much had to climb a muddy 2' tall wall to get out of it. I'm always trying to find more places, ideally not very far from home so I don't have to do 6-hrs of round trip hwy travel just to have some fun. Even so, I've been thinking of checking this place out sometime, it's a bit east of Battle Creek.
