just another watch this lesson

Never wheel alone, have cash on sundays, and there is never anyone around to pull you out until the tow truck shows up, then everyone shows up to watch. lol

in light of all the people submerging their jeeps lately, and the pic above of it plowing into the water i offer this. you don't need to go full throttle plowing into an unknown body of water.

a winch is a must when offroadin. ive been stuck a few times but not to bad. only time i panicked is when i layed it in her side. that was a little scarry at first.

I always figured if you're going fast enough you could just skip across the top?

We don't have much water here...but I did find a little. My Black jeep is now tan. My honest theory is to go ~10-15mph and try to keep that momentum. is that bad? I don't want to end up like these guys!

my theory is this, if you know the obstacle you are crossing, at least seen someone do it, have some what of an idea what its like, how deep it is. if then its determined doable, go for it. sometimes you need some momentum to get through.

IF, you have no clue whats in that water, i do not go into it with momentum. everycase is different, if i don't have to go through water i don't know i won't, if i have to i will approach it, put the front end in, and if i still feel good, i will drop in with a little wheel speed and just let it go through with a constant speed. and if i don't make it, i'm not burried, or damaged. and this way most of the time you are left with the option to back up and make a decision to try again, or to back out of the obstacle.

thats ok ryan, we'll use your tj as a dipstick ok.

the pic in my avatar, i was the dipstick, i dipped the front end in, it was definately deep, i think we put a strap on the back in case it got deeper in front of me and it just nose dived, and then i hit the gas and pulled through. pic doesn't show as much, that is a huge drop out of that tube, i felt like i was looking straight down over the hood.

i post these to show i am by no means timid at crossing water either:

The first pick was the outer edge. Took it slow the first time then the pic. Bad pics were goin slow. Barely made the length of jeep, back tires about 2 feet from edge of hole. damn open diffs.

lol, i said the same thing, i was just scratchin, didn't even know anyone was on the other side with a camera, i was getting frustrated waiting for someone to drive in and hook up a strap. it is rediculously hard to walk around a jeep in there, oh i just remembered, then the guy that hooked the strap up had his girlfriend in the driver seat, i said no way dude, get her out of there and just follow me and don't do anything dumb like hitting the brakes or anything.

I now know why I prefer 4x4 in the desert. Thats some horrible stuff you got sticking to your Jeep but nothing a good power hose wont remove

Okay, thanks. Thats pretty much what I do. The biggest difference here is we don't have that much water. The small amount which I can drive through that I've found is less than 2 ft. deep. the mud underneath is kinda nasty at one end, but nothing like grizzly's mud.

How long was your Jeep in that mud hole?
I drive through comparable holes very often and there never was a problem.

Also look into a rebuild kit for starter/alternator they are cheap and easy to do I just cleaned my starter and it worked like a champ

The first day i got my jeep i learned my lesson about unknown territory very quick, i took it on a muddy trail and the trail had a huge mud puddle to the right and an easy path around it to the left i opted for the mud puddle because i thought i was invinsible but i didnt know there were huge ruts from a bronco with 35's under the water i ran it right up onto my axles so the wheels were off the ground had to wait 2 hours before someone came with pratically a quarter mile of chain to pull me out.

I got stuck in ruts in a big mudhole last year in OBX. I started to shut off the engine and my friends yelled for me not to...keep it running! Their thought was that turning it off created a "vacuum effect" sucking water into my exhaust and into the engine.

Is this true? If you get stuck in water/mudhole, do you keep it running if possible?

Yeah it seemed to work...it kept running with the exhaust bubbling the water until my buddy winched me out.

Yes, not my Jeep that's stuck. Sold this thing last month. Love my friends expression - "you're screwed dude."

only there for about 45 min. Got lucky, no water in diff and none in oil, water didn't quite make to breather, another 6 inches would have been worse. While changing wheel joints found a busted axle stub. Better to find it now than on the trails, so i guess some good came of it. It's still had a great day of wheelin though.
