I guess the Bear population is doing quite well this year. Ever since they did away with the spring bear hunt & baiting.
Mabey next time!

Not bad. I wish I had video of my Jeep/Bear encounter.

Driving a dirt road carved out of the side of a mountain in Elk State Forest, I see the trees rustling on my left, and this black bear kind of rolls out of the hill and plops in front my of jeep. Sits there for a second looking around, then moseys on over to the other side of the road and rolls the rest of the way down. It was almost surreal, but we cracked up.

As cute as it look's, I think I would have been back in the Jeep and pedal to the metal.

Great moment though on camera.

"Small" is relative... they are generally around 250lbs, which is small compared to the average grizzly which tips the scales at 400lbs. But I sure as hell wouldn't want to fight it.

WTH! I thought they were small as in 120 lb, forget the tent & next time I go up into the mountains I am definately taking the guns
It's funny, I have met a lot of people in the US who ask about all the venomous snakes in Aus', they are nothing compared to one of those big black hairy buggers! we don't have bears at home so I didn't know anything about them untill I moved to the US

Oh yeah, I always take at least one rifle with me when I camp. Usually an 8mm or an AK variant. PA Black Bears don't get as big as Colorado Black Bears, but I still don't want to tango with one without a big gun and a long knife.

I don't know what kind of snakes you have in Aus land, but in PA we have Timber Rattlers and Copperheads, they don't bother me one bit. I'm not trying to get bit by them, but if I cross one on a trail, I'd be much less inclined to kill it than a bear or mountain lion.

Cats (Pumas, Mountain Lions, Jaguars, Cougars) scare me a lot more than any other animal in the woods. Thankfully they are very rare in PA.

Nice pic! How did you manage to hold the camera steady over your shoulder as you were running away from your Jeep?

The bear was on Douglas Pass, just north of Loma, in Western Colorado.
Here's the Wifey getting a bit too close, lol.

(Notice how She is looking out for Momma Bear!!!)
