Can someone tell me if all in line 258 6 cylinder 4.2 engines are the same. My 258 blew a head gasket and wound up with a cracked head. I've got a chance to buy a newer 258 with 89.000 miles for $200. I just want to make sure it will fit in my 1980 CJ7. I believe the newer 258 is a 87 year. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
there are a few differences, mostly in the head. head bolt size changed, different valve cover. the 87 could be serpentene belt, they made both that year. intake manifold is different.
I loved my 89' 4.2 motor. Mine had a rebuilt 2bl. Carter carb. that worked great, but that's not the norm. If your 4.2 in 87' has the Carter 2bl. You should do a search for a motorcraft or weber. Lots of info. in the YJ section, or use the search tool! Good luck, with your swap.
