83 CJ7 AX15 swap

This is a 3 part question. I am going to replace the 4 speed trans in jgano's 83 CJ7 4.2L with an AX15 5 speed from my 90 YJ 4.2L. 1st: Is the #1 gear in the 4 speed a lower gear ratio than the #1 gear in the 5 speed? If the 4 speed is a better offroad transmission than the 5 speed then I will not be doing the swap but I will still rebuild the trans. The 1-2 gear syncro's are gone in the AX15 so I am currently rebuilding it. I have a pretty good idea of what I need to do, replace, and rig up to make this work but I don't want to overlook anything out of the ordinary. 2nd: are there any tips or tricks to rebuilding the AX15 that are easy to miss? 3rd: Are there any major issues with the AX15 swap into the CJ? The trans looks to be an easy rebuild as long as I get everything 100% perfect. Thanks!

we need to know what 4 spd is in the cj. it may be a t18 and you definately want to keep it. t176, or t4 and its ok to swap out. you might even be better off with the t176 than ax 15. but if it were me i'd be putting in a t18 if you want off road performance. check out http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge...on_gateway.htm

Thanks for the info doc. I think it is a T4 but I will have to make double sure. The reasons I am thinking of the 5 speed is that I already have it and the rebuild parts are not too expensive. The other reason is that I was looking to get a better (slower) 1st gear for offroad.

having it on hand is good. the first gear in the ax15 is average. i bought a sm465 w/ a 6.55:1 first gear on ebay for 20 bux near me, this also had the np203 t case which i'm using to make a doubler t case out of. t18, sm465 and sm420 are all bullet proof transmissions that can be picked up cheap.

6.55 would be really nice. I will look into those other trans options. I am still going to rebuild the ax15 but I may just sell it. thanks again
