Carb problem on friends 79 CJ-5 1979

Hi, I've been a member for a while but need a little help on a friends CJ-5 any help would be appreciated. She has a 1979 CJ-5 which she hasn't started for almost a year. I went over and put a new battery in and tried to start it, it turns over but wouldn't start. I sprayed some starting fluid in and it starts right up but dies as soon as it uses up the fluid. The carb is not getting fuel. I checked the fuel pump and the outlet line is pumping good, and I checked the inline fuel filter and put a new one in, then checked the feed line to the carb and I am getting good fuel to the float bowl. When I pump the pedal there is no fuel getting down to the engine. I assume the problem is at the needle and seats. will spraying carb cleaner down there work? can I loosen the needles from the top and spray or does it have to be rebuilt? what can I try?

I would think that if it has set for a while, its the needle valve and seat on the float that is stuck. Not allowing fuel to get into the fuel bowl.

Easiest solution would be to rebuild the carb. Sometimes tapping on the top of the carb with a rubber hammer will jar the float enough to dislodge the needle from the seat. But if the carb has enough gunk/varnish built up in it from sitting, then a rebuild is in order.

Spraying carb cleaner into the mouth of the carb isn't going to accomplish anything. All the important parts are internal.

Agreed, rebuild the carb and also start using an additive like Marvel Mystery Oil. Todays gas is hard on carbs.

I agree carb rebuild in order . It will be all varnished up. You might need to pull the fuel tank and flush as well. By the way squirting gas in a carb or dribbling a little gas in a carb is harmless in a situation such as yours for testing. Starting fluid is a good way to beat the rod bearings to death. Even a short burst is hard on them.

Why will starting fluid hurt the rod bearings?
