CJ 5 '75 3.8 Engine

Hi, I would like to hear some opinions from you experts .
Considering to get a 3.8 liter 74kw/100hp CJ 5 from 1975. I believe everything on it is original, but some things made me doubt it.

First, I've seen that there is a exhaust under the left side of the jeep, Is it possible that it has arrived this way originally? What do you think of this way of exhaust mount?
Also, I would like to know more about this engine, I see it has pretty low power but If I wont go extreme with it, will it do the job? What about it's durability?

I've found it to be called 232, can someone just confirm that?

Here are some pix exactly of this one I would buy.

The exhaust under the drivers seat is after market, IMO, It should be directed straight out the back. Try to snap some photos of the engine area - exhaust manifold etc.

100hp sounds about right for a 1975, choked with emissions junk. I had a 1953 M-38A1 (like a CJ5) with a 1963 3.7liter 225 cu inch odd fire V-6 with 160 hp and the exhaust came out the sides because there is no room to run exhaust out the rear, due to the gas tank moved from under the seat to the rear. The exhaust was ok on and off the road. Check the frame for rust thru and check the tub near the wheel wells, seat mounts and tailgate for rust.

I owned a 1975 CJ5 new. Hard to tell from your photos but the seats and steering wheel don't look stock. The fuel tank was in the back with a skid plate which caused it to rust through for me in 1981!. Exhaust was out the back. 232 was OK in its day but would be way underpowered compared to todays Jeeps.

I bought new 73 Cj5 with a 304 V8. The 232 was low power. Your seats, exhaust, bumpers and possibly steering wheel large after market. I wouldn't waste time and money on a 232. If you're going to change anyway, go with a 350, future parts are cheap and plentiful.
