CJ7 5 speed sloppy shifter ???

hello, i'm new to this board but it looks pretty cool. I was hoping someone could help me with a question. I'm looking to buy an '86 CJ7, 6 cyl 5 speed. THe guy claims everything is in good running condition but that the shift lever is sloppy. He said he was told this is somewhat common in 5 speeds and that there is a kit you can get to fix it. Does this make any sense or is he filling me full of it? Thanks for any and all help!

Any transmission is rebuildable, provided that the housing is in good shape. I would check with a local transmission shop, and find out how much they would charge to rebuild the transmission. I know that there are various degrees of rebuilding them, so it would change the cost as well. Sometimes it is cheaper to replace a transmission. Someone had posted on here a while ago about getting a remanufactured transmission, and the cost was very decent.

Hard to say if he's pulling your leg or not. If you don't have the mechanical experience, you could take it to a mechanic to have it checked. If he is on the level you can probably buy replacement parts to tighen up your linkage, or you could go to an aftermarket short throw shifter from hurst or B&M. Your call.

Mostly likey it has the t-5 in it. I had an 85 that was the same way, apprently there is a bushing( best word I can come up with) that wears out, Mine would just fall over... lol anyway, the local shop fixed it and it was fine. So he could be telling you the truth.
