extended brake lines

Hey CJ folks,

I am currently in the process of rebuilding a CJ5 for a friend from scratch. I put on a 2.5" spring lift and 2" body lift. It fits 33's nicely and things are going well. My current problem is brake lines. The stock ones are too short (almost tight at ride height).

It's a 73 CJ5 with drum brakes all around. Do you guys use extended flex lines and if so, what brand? A link would be great.

I was looking at the lines and it looks like I could mount the front hard lines on the bottom of the frame instead of inside the frame to get another 2" or so of slack. I would prefer new flex lines.

Suggestions are much appreciated.

Check out your local parts store. Jeep used a variety of GM brake components and therefore a lot of the brake hoses will interchange. I strongly disagree with Cj5carlton on having a hydraulic shop build the lines unless they are a DOT certified shop set up for building lines. Brake lines are your lifeline and failure is not an option. I have built hydraulic lines for years but I will not touch a brake line other than an air brake line. That is just my two cents worth but any reputable 4WD shop can help you find the appropriate DOT certified brake line.

Ok thanks for the info. I went to my local 4wheel parts and they said they don't sell extended lines for cj's and that people just move the hard lines down... I thought "Yeah, ok sure they do" and left. I will look into getting some of those GM lines you mentioned, thanks.

Although I did move my hard line mounts down a bit, I used Goodridge braided stainless extended brake lines on the '71 I built. It was lifted similar to yours and ran a '74 D30 drum axle.

I got them either from Quadratec or 4WDH.

Going 4wheeling tomorrow and need new front brake lines at least. I like the idea of getting some GMC/Chevy lines. Anyone know a part # or what year/model will work with the cj5 with drum brakes?
