Help with 85 cj rear axle!

Okay so i dont know whats wrong with it yet but it does not move. to drive the CJ i have to put it in 4WD so the front moves it.Any one have any ideas and what i can do to check? Thank you

is the rear drive shaft present? does the rear shaft move and the jeep doesn't in 2wd? if the shaft is moving and the vehicle isn't the ring gear is most likely completely shot, or maybe a shaft or two is broken. give us some more info.

as stated if it has a drive shaft then something in the diff is not working right, also check the axle nuts to make sure they are on tight.. though I doubt thats the issue.

There really isn't much that it could be. If it runs in 4wd then that pretty much rules out a broken output shaft in the Tcase.

Is it making any noise at all? Notice any bangs or clunks before this happened?

not that i noticed i have an extra axle and i am just getting into jeeps so is there like a shaft or something inside that will slide out? it runs in 4WD but not 2WD so idk im confused as hell haha

you still didn't answer if the rear drive shaft is moving in 2 wd

ok, if the driveshaft is turning and the jeep is not moving, something in the rear axle is toast. ring gear has been completely sheered off, axles broken, something, pull the cover off and look for the good news.

you may see something by taking the cover off only. if not, remove the shafts, and carrier, but i'm guessing you're gonna see a smoothed out ring gear or something.

possibly spun the two piece axle? is either tire sticking out?. sounds like what has happened to me once but tire was not sticking out. just a shot...
